Michelle Rodriguez On Turning Down The Avatar: The Way of Water

In the 2009 blockbuster movie Avatar, Michelle Rodriguez played the role of Trudy Chacon, a skilled pilot who works for a military contractor that is trying to exploit the resources of the planet Pandora. Her character is depicted as courageous and is ultimately shown dead in the explosion.

In an interview, the Lost actress revealed that when James Cameron approached her to bring back her character in the sequel, she refused immediately as she felt that she has been resurrected from death in several other franchises in the past including Fast & Furious, and thus decided to not come back in the Avatar: The Way of Water

“Dude, when I saw Jim recently, he was like, ‘I was thinking, What if Michelle came back? A lot of the other characters came back [in The Way of Water]. I was like, ‘You can’t do that—I died as a martyr. We can’t do a fourth, that would be overkill’.”

Michelle Rodriguez On Her Character’s Dubious Deaths

The Fast & Furious actress revealed her explanation for the comeback of her character in the sequels of several franchises after being shown dead in their prequels. Michelle Rodriguez added that her character generally lacks a love interest in most of her movies and thus the makers have no idea whether her character should be brought back in the sequels or not.

“I don’t understand, it’s so weird. I guess they don’t know what to do with the girl who doesn’t have a boyfriend. ‘she doesn’t have a boyfriend. Should we keep her alive, or kill her?”

It looked like Rodriguez had her reasons to turn down Avatar: The Way of Water. The Lost actress has surely not made her come back in the Avatar franchise but continues to work in other franchises like Fast & Furious. Rodriguez will soon appear in Fast X, the tenth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, which will release on May 9, 2023.
