Creed 3 star Michael B. Jordan says his upcoming movie will be heavily inspired by Japanese anime. The actor revealed that the boxing scenes will exhibit certain elements taken from his favorite series. The third installment of the Creed franchise will be the first film to not feature Sylvester Stallone.
The Rocky actor remains a producer of the movie, which also marks the first directorial debut of Jordan. This drastic change will see the Black Panther actor’s vision come to life.
Michael B. Jordan Says Creed 3 Fighting Scenes Are Anime-Inspired
As an actor and director, Michael B. Jordan is expected to bring innovative ways to make the movie stand out from the rest of the series. In his interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jordan discussed how Japanese anime influenced the movie’s fight scenes.
“It was a gift and a curse. There’s been eight other movies before me. You can shoot a boxing match so many different ways. I think ‘cause I was kind of put in a corner, it kind of forced me to be more creative and really find, like, think outside the box of how to make the fights different. So we shot all the fights in IMAX. And also, I had a huge Japanese anime influence on a lot of my fights. I’m an anime nerd.”
As a self-confessed anime lover, he also described how they executed the choreography using the inspiration he got from these shows. He told Total Film:
“There are artistic choices that were influenced by my passion for anime that we brought into the boxing and training sequences. With boxing anime like Hajime No Ippo, I really love the inner dialogue of what’s going on and happening in the ring from the characters.”
It is no secret that Jordan loves all things animation. From Disney Pixar to cartoons to Japanese anime, he was obsessed with all of them. In a Twitter post in 2018, Jordan was asked about his top favorite anime. He answered:
“That’s a good question. My favorite anime is Naruto Shippuden. Been a fan of it for years, since I was maybe 12-13 years old.”
This is not the first time Jordan incorporated anime into his movies. In fact, the Killmonger costume is fashioned after Dragon Ball’s Vegeta. Now, fans will see how the actor-director will seamlessly blend the inspiration he got from these anime shows into the upcoming Creed 3 film.
What To Expect From Michael B. Jordan’s First Directorial Debut
The third series in the Creed franchise will focus on Jordan’s Adonis “Donnie” Creed and Damian Anderson (played by Jonathan Majors). The latter will portray a former boxing champ and childhood friend of Adonis, who will become the antagonist. With a touch of anime style, Jordan reiterated that it would add more depth to their characters:
“It was really important to me that we see the emotional journeys of both Donnie and Damian in those scenes, and anime definitely played a part with that inspiration.”
Creed 3 will also feature Florian Munteanu as Viktor Drago, Tessa Thompson as Bianca, and Phylicia Rashad as Mary Anne Creed. The movie’s first trailer was released in October and is set to premiere in theaters this March 3, 2023.
