Everyone knows that Robert Downey Jr has earned a special corner in every Marvel fan’s heart due to his Iron Man portrayal, who sacrificed himself to save the world from Thanos. But, what many fans might not know would be the fact that the star used to feel jealous of mystic arts wielder, Doctor Strange star, Benedict Cumberbatch. Well, it is something he confessed on his own!
Both actors have worked together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. However, they are bonded way earlier but in a completely different world from superheroes. They had one thing in common before working together in the 2018 film, Sherlock Holmes!
Robert Downey Jr and Benedict Cumberbatch Portrayed Different Versions of Sherlock Holmes

The 58-year-old actor, Robert Downey Jr played the role of iconic spy, Sherlock Holmes in 2009’s movie, Sherlock Holmes. He reprised his role in its sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch portrayed a different version of the character in the BBC series, Sherlock.
In an interview with Collider, the latter explained about sharing notes with the Iron Man star regarding their characters.
“I sat down on the sofa with Robert Downey, Jr. last night, and we had our first conversation and shared notes on playing Sherlock Holmes. This is the most dramatized fictional character of all time, so there’s a lot to talk about.”
In a different interview with Vanity Fair, Downey Jr explained feeling a bit jealous of his Endgame co-star after watching the latter’s performance.
He complimented the actor by sharing, “Very impressed with Benedict” adding, “Such smart writing on that show. I have screen envy.”
What Did Benedict Cumberbatch Have to Say for Robert Downey Jr?
The duo starred together in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame and the experience was more than wonderful for the English actor. He complimented his co-star for being a “leading” man with whom he had no problem working along.
He told Entertainment Weekly,
“I got on very well with Robert Downey Jr. He’s the most inclusive leading man, and generous to a fault, and just a pleasure to be around.”
He continued,
“It’s a very happy set when RDJ’s on it, and that goes for everyone, not just the actors.”
He complimented his personality by sharing,
“He’s funny, he’s quick, he’s so light on his feet, such a smart-thinking actor. It’s quite something to watch people like RDJ, who have been doing it so brilliantly for so long, in their prime.”
Given that the duo has nothing but good words for each other, it seems that they work along quite well despite having to share different versions of the same character.
