After a majorly disappointing Phase 4, fans had a lot of hope for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania since it was going to kick off the fifth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even after the trailer dropped for Ant-Man 3, the hype was only increasing as fans were super stoked to see how Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man would emerge victorious over Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror.
Unfortunately, the movie’s release was met with a ton of negative reviews causing Ant-Man 3 to fall on the lower side of the rating scale. The film has an extremely low score of 47% on Rotten Tomatoes while the two of its predecessors each have scores in the 80s range. Now, Ant-Man 3, which was supposed to be a mega Marvel film, might be ending its run at the theatre with a box office disappointment. According to predictions, Ant-Man 3 could have the lowest box office collection as compared to the rest of the franchise.
Is Ant-Man 3 Going to Fall Short at the Box Office?
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania came into the box office with a bang. The film had a humongous opening weekend at the box office with over $100 million domestically. This makes Ant-Man 3’s opening weekend much bigger than Ant-Man 1 and Ant-Man 2. Despite the initial win in its run, it looks like the film might not be able to surpass its two predecessors when it comes to total box office earnings.
According to predictions, Ant-Man 3 could make a total of anywhere between $470 million to $510 million in its complete run in theatres. This is a much lower figure compared to the two other films in the franchise. While the first film made $519 million, the sequel to it ended its theatrical run with $622 million. This means that there is a strong possibility that Ant-Man 3 will fall short of reaching the usual standard of the franchise by a total of $49 million.
Given the fact that Ant-Man 3 was supposed to increase the hype for the superhero universe by introducing the new big bad of the upcoming phases, it didn’t deliver on the promise. Ant-Man 3 Writer Doesn’t Agree with the Reviews
Screenwriter Jeff Loveness opened up to The Daily Mail about the negative feedback the film has been receiving. Loveness stated that he was in a low spot thanks to the reviews and could not understand where it went wrong. He added that he’s proud of what he wrote and the feedback made him feel “really sad.”
“I was in a pretty low spot… Those were not good reviews, and I was like, ‘What the…?’ I’m really proud of what I wrote for Jonathan [Majors] and Michelle Pfeiffer [scientist Janet Pym. I thought that was good stuff, you know? And so I was just despondent, and I was really sad about it.”
However, he soon decided to attend a public screening of the film and when he saw people laughing at the jokes he wrote, his spirits were lifted.
“I’m like, ‘Goddamn! No, [the reviews] are wrong! I’m right! MODOK is great!’ I’m pretty happy with it overall, and I think I learned how to take a punch this week. And now that I learned that it’s not too bad, I can just get on with making things.”
Actor Jonathan Majors also addressed the reviews on IndieWire’s Screen Talk podcast and stated that they cannot change the way he looked at himself. He also added that a 47% score means nothing when the film is doing well at the box office.
“It doesn’t change how I see myself, period. It’s all data…It’s just people. They have an opinion. You always have an opinion. I’m no fool. I know these are people writing it. These aren’t my Yale professors or my drama teachers. These are people who have kids and they have a perspective…I look at the aggregate and, ok, 47. But what does that 47 mean when you also got this amount of box office? What do these things mean? It’s information. I am in the know. I won’t play myself. If you are a critic on a level, I probably know you and understand your politics.”
Well, both Loveness and Majors are proud of the work they have done in the film. However, this does not change the fact that the MCU really needs to hit it out of the park with the next one if they want to keep their fan base engaged.
