Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood now. From her debut in Garden Party to the most recent Causeway, she has had a massively successful career filled with iconic roles. Be it The Hunger Games, Mother!, X-Men, or Silver Linings Playbook, she has masterfully portrayed her characters giving the audience relatable, raw, and even almost tangible performances one after the other.
And obviously, with so many movies in her bag, she also had to collaborate with a lot of co-stars, with whom she often had to get intimate on screen. And although she is one of those artists who believe in keeping things as authentic as possible, even where intimacy is involved, some experiences had made her wonder if her need for authenticity was often taken advantage of by her male co-stars.
Jennifer Lawrence felt taken advantage of on set
According to Jennifer Lawrence, she has never had any problems with getting down with intimacy if the story required it in any of her movies. As she feels, “It should be all real.” However, it seems like she had been taken advantage of because of this very dedication to her craft.
She and many actresses to be fair had mentioned before that male actors often have this tendency to go overboard with kissing scenes, by using their tongue, and even groping in some cases.
And it turned out, to her complete bafflement, that it was not always for the sake of portraying authenticity or being true to their characters. Sometimes, she mentioned, that it was merely to get a reaction or to see just how far they could take it without being stopped. And this knowledge really hit her hard.
Although she made a quip saying, “God, am I wrong? There I am thinking, ‘This is just the way it is’, and maybe all these men have been taking advantage of me,” it is evident that she absolutely did not like that turn of events. However, thankfully for her, she had kind of learned from experience how to tackle that.
Jennifer Lawrence took different measures with different actors
Although it might not be exactly uncomfortable, kissing your friend sometimes might feel weird. And Jennifer Lawrence it seems took good measures to prevent that during her time in The Hunger Games, especially as she felt comfortable enough with her colleague friends to not come across as disrespectful.
This sometimes led to a not-very-fun experience for her co-stars Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson whom she had to kiss in the franchise.
Hemsworth once mentioned in an interview, “She’s one of my best friends, I love her. But, if we had a kissing scene, she would make a point of eating garlic or tuna fish or something that was so disgusting,” which seemed to completely put him off. He further added joking,
“Right before the scene, she’d be like, ‘Yeah, I ate tuna’ or ‘I had garlic, and I didn’t brush my teeth.’ And I’d be like, ‘Fantastic, I can’t wait to get in there and taste it!'”
Jennifer Lawrence herself admitted to this saying, “I was like, ‘Who cares?’ and I’d eat mustard and tuna.” This behavior, though, drastically changed when she had to make out with Christian Bale on screen for American Hustle. She noted, “I did American Hustle with Christian Bale and I was like, ‘Oh damn,’ and I was really clean and ate lots and lots of mints.”
However, it seems her favorite co-star whom she ever filmed an intimate scene with has to be Bradley Cooper. Working in several movies together, it seems they built a kind of trust bond which helped them to be comfortable and learn each other’s boundaries. Lawrence noted,
“He’s respectful, not gross. Not one of those Hollywood guys who is like, ‘Oh, I can sleep with anybody I want.’ That helps. It means that when it comes to the romantic stuff, you don’t freak out.”
And thankfully this turned out extremely well for them, and the audience as well as their off-screen trust and chemistry was extremely evident on screen, which gave way to some masterpieces such as Serena, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle.
