Matt Damon’s 2021 movie Stillwater has been a rollercoaster ride for the actor which is hard to put in a box. Appearing in the crime thriller with a dramatic storyline involving a young woman in Europe who is imprisoned abroad for a falsely accused murder case, Damon felt excessively worried about the aftermath of the film.

Feeling anxious that the film trailers might be selling Stillwater for something completely different, Matt Damon reflected upon his difficulties surrounding the film during Marc Maron’s WTF podcast. Raising his concern, the actor admitted that he didn’t want to lie to viewers about the movie. Instead, he wanted to let his audiences know that it wasn’t a simple story about finding justice after catching the bad guys.

Matt Damon Reflected Upon His $17M Movie Stillwater

After bagging million-dollar roles and earning a reputation in the film industry, Matt Damon appeared in the critically acclaimed 2021 movie, Stillwater. Damon who is commonly known for his heroic roles in Hollywood delivered a dramatic movie about fighting for his young daughter’s freedom who has been falsely accused of murder and imprisoned in Marseilles, France.

Appearing as a guest on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, Matt Damon described his movie to be a tricky one. Admitting that it’s not a simple story about finding the bad guys and getting justice for his daughter, Damon confessed that his 2021 epic might be a tougher sell to the audience.

Discussing how he wants complete transparency about the storyline with his audience, the actor claimed to be troubled by the aftermath of Stillwater. As the actor claimed to have issues with audiences deciphering his movies in a completely wrong way, Damon admitted worrying about the same for Stillwater

Matt Damon Was Troubled By His Movie’s Transparency  

Matt Damon’s pure drama movie that turns into a crime thriller, apparently worried the actor to his core, following its trailer release. Claiming to be worried that the trailer might be selling his movie as something it’s not, Damon confessed how he wants transparency about Stillwater. During the podcast, the actor thus admitted that he doesn’t want to lie to viewers about Stillwater‘s concept.

That’s why I worry if they sell it too much like a thriller” Damon shared his cause for worry. “[In Stillwater,]I have no particular skills. I don’t have anything that’s going to help me here. So it’s not a thriller. It’s a thriller kind of setup but it really is a drama” the actor explained the backdrop of his character in the movie.

Discussing further the 52-year-old confessed how he never used a different storyline for a movie as bait to attract his audiences. “I’m just an actor on this one but listen, there are always these debates about do you bait and switch?” Damon shared. He then replied, “I’ve never ever believed that. I think you’ve got to be completely honest with the audience. This is what this movie is”. 

Eventually, it appears that Matt Damon was right to worry about Stillwater, as audiences indeed failed to understand the movie. Thus, Stillwater grossed $17M against its $20M budget, while receiving generally positive reviews.
