Due to his filmography, there is no shortage of roles he would have been offered in the past, many of which he would have rejected as well. One of these roles also happens to be in Christopher Nolan’s film. However, a role, in particular, turned out to be beneficial for him when he turned it down but did not play well with his best friend.

Matt Damon Almost Became Matt Murdock

Before Ben Affleck got the role of Matt Murdock in 2003’s Daredevil, there was someone else who was considered for the role as well. Matt Damon, his best friend, was first offered the role and although he was keen on playing the character, he rejected the role ultimately. Even though the movie could have opened doors for him in the world of Marvel, the actor saw caution in working with a director he knew nothing about.

“When that one came along, I chickened out because I couldn’t tell. I hadn’t seen the director’s work and I didn’t know. So I just said, ‘no.’”

He had no idea how Mark Steven Johnson worked and was in no shape to experiment with the director either. It was not more so about taking a risk than it was about putting his career on the line. The actor even added that if the director would have been different, he would have jumped in without a second thought. In his mind, if Christopher Nolan were to make Daredevil, he would be first in line to star in the film. This, however, is ironic considering that the actor rejected Nolan’s offer when the director wanted him to play Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight.

Matt Damon Knew How Disappointed Ben Affleck Was

2003’s Daredevil may have been a commercial success, but fans were not fond of it at all. Somewhere or the other Matt Damon’s instinct had been right. However, Ben Affleck was more than enthusiastic about taking the role and was heartbroken with the result.

“And the movie ended up doing very well, even though I don’t think Ben was ultimately very proud of it.”

Affleck did go on to become Batman, but the way Daredevil stained his heart was a factor he could not let go of. The fans’ disappointment was wholeheartedly resonated by him and he only wished for the movie to be better than what it came to be.
