In an interview with Reveal magazine (via Metro U.K.), Matt Damon opened up about what it was like kissing Angelina Jolie on the set of The Good Shepherd. Damon stated,

“We’re old friends so it was like kissing my sister – really awkward and generally awful!”

This contempt for the kiss stemmed because Jolie and Damon had known each other for a while and the actor was also friends with Jolie’s then-lover, Brad Pitt. We can see how the kiss could’ve been a bit problematic for Damon.

This was not the only time Damon expressed his dislike for sharing a kiss with Jolie. During their appearance on Good Morning America, they talked about the kiss and the two had differing opinions on it. While Damon stated, “It’s weird…We all know each other,” Jolie countered,

“In reality, both the people we’re involved with couldn’t have cared less about that because they know us. You know, it’s one of those things where it’s like the least threatening person … You know, good luck to you guys, I hope it’s not too awkward.”

Jolie was then asked to compare her kisses with Damon and Pitt and she smartly replied that while one was just a friend, the other was the love of her life.

Apart from his dislike for the kiss, Damon had quite a pleasant time working for Robert De Niro on the film. In an interview with Tribute, Damon was asked about how he was able to get into character so well and he only had one man to thank.

“There was a lot of research to get into it but the job was made a lot easier by the fact that it was being directed by Robert De Niro. He was literally sitting as close as you are now for the entirety of the movie. Just sitting right there and watching like a hawk; every single detail. He was really particular about everything…He really knew what he wanted which is great.”

He continued,

“Two things – one, it’s great to be with a director who knows exactly what they want. The other thing, when the director happens to be one of the greatest actors who ever lived, you really feel like your performance is gonna be in good hands.”

The Good Shepherd went on to make $100 million at the box office. While the film received mixed reviews from critics, Damon was applauded for his brilliant performance. The New York Observer even called the film a must-see.

You can stream The Good Shepherd on Hulu.
