Massive Entertainment will Allow You to Work For and then Thankfully Betray Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars Outlaws

Massive Entertainment is working on a Star Wars project that features Tatooine. Nobody saw THAT coming. During their Star Wars Outlaws panel at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, Ubisoft Massive and LucasFilm jointly announced some new information about the game.

These new details include reveals about Star Wars Outlaws‘ playable and explorable locations. The two revealed locations are the new moon Toshara and, of course, Tatooine. Massive Entertainment also shared that Jabba the Hutt is going to play a major role in the game, and players will have the choice to both work for and then eventually betray him if they feel like it.

Massive Entertainment San Diego Comic-Con representative and Star Wars Outlaws director Julian Gerighty revealed that the new moon Toshara takes direct inspiration from the eastern African savannah. It features huge open-world plains that fit perfectly with the main character Kay Vess’ signature vehicle, the speeder, which can also be customized by players to some extent.

Moreover, the Massive Studio team also visited Tanzania to take inspiration for bringing Toshara to life. Julian said that Toshara actually started off as a “biome,” which is obviously inspired by African biomes in the southeast, after which they put an alien “twist” on it. Gerighty then took it all the way back to “the first shots” of Tatooine, talking about how stunning but familiar the architecture of the setting is, with the alien twist of having “two suns.”

In Toshara’s case, Massive Entertainment created a “huge mountain,” and inside it, there is a “crystalline substance” and an “orange, very reflective material.” According to Julian, that is how they incorporated the “alien nature” into it, so the setting feels unique and fresh but familiar at the same time.

This is where Matt Martin, the senior creative executive at Lucasfilm, assisted the Massive Entertainment team and mentioned that they have an “80/20” rule with set designs, with 80% being familiar and the remaining 20% being alien. The city itself is fantastical, but the overall setting, inspired by East Africa, is familiar.

Massive Entertainment then focused more on the famous Tatooine, which will look similar to what we have gotten used to, which is a huge barren desert. The team admitted that they weren’t just trying to recreate Tatooine but were trying to create “a place with its own sense of history.” Julian revealed that while brainstorming about the location for Kay, Lucasfilm Games encouraged them to come up with new settings, which is basically Toshara’s origin story.

With Toshara, the developers want players to truly experience Kay’s “scoundrel” fantasy world.

Massive Entertainment then went on to reveal that Jabba the Hutt’s palace will be the center of the game’s criminal underworld. Players will run missions for him, but they can also choose to betray him if they please. However, all of these actions are going to have their own consequences.

Massive Entertainment didn’t provide us with any gameplay or trailer updates during their SDCC panel, but since Star Wars Outlaws is coming out next year, we don’t have to wait for too long. Until then, let us know in the comments which path you’ll take. Will you continue to work for Jabba the Hutt, or will you heartlessly betray him?
