In an interview with IGN at San Diego Comic Con, Todd McFarlane looks to have had a slip of the tongue. Whilst discussing the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and more accurately, the portrayal of Venom – the character McFarlane co-created with Mike Zeck and David Michelinie – in the game, McFarlane may well have got himself in hot water with Insomniac Games, if what he hinted at is to be believed.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is Coming and Bringing Venom With It
Unless you’ve been living under a rock these past few months, you’ll be well aware that just round the corner is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the upcoming sequel to two of the biggest and best PlayStation 4 exclusives, 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man and 2020’s Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales. Both of these games had accolades and awards thrown at them, so expectation of the next game in the franchise is at an all time high, and with Marvel’s Wolverine following close behind, there’s a lot riding on the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, if Insomniac’s Marvel Universe is to take off.

The marketing around the game is huge, with seemingly every other day another interview, gameplay video, behind-the-scenes featurette or leak being released, it’s hard to keep up with everything. During a discussion with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con, Todd McFarlane was asked whether he would give his seal of approval to Insomniac’s interpretation of his creation.
With no hesitation, McFarlane said perhaps more than he should.
“Oh yeah, no that’s cool, right. I played that right… go on shoot, I don’t want that skinny, little Peter Parker dude. I’m going for that big dude over there. Anyone can throw around tanks. Done… done.”
Now without context of the physical actions that doesn’t really seem like a lot, but in the video linked below, courtesy of @EvanFilarca, when saying “I‘m going for that big dude over there.” McFarlane mimics a controller, as if he’s playing with Venom. This could be hopeful reasoning, but he then continues before seemingly abruptly cutting himself off, realising he’s saying more than is necessary about the subject.
Other playable characters in the franchise are nothing new, with the much-maligned playable sections of Miles and MJ more-so in the first game being particular gameplay low points, but to be able to take on the role and control the villain? That’d be a whole different and unexpected level of content. If this does in fact happen to be the case, and we get to play as Venom, does this mean he ends up turning anti-hero and becoming the Lethal Protector? Is it just a potential DLC add-on? A skin? Or is McFarlane getting confused and mis-speaking?
