Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s File Size Revealed, and It’s Worrying Some Fans and Pleasing Others

Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Other than the upcoming release of Starfield, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the most anticipated release of the year, or at least, of those still to come. With that comes certain questions that the developers like to keep to themselves, or maybe even twist favourably, for example the supposed lack of boundaries on planets was something Todd Howard glossed over for Starfield, but in reality is of no real importance to the game as a whole.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s developers have been largely on the up and up, releasing information about the game during trailers, interviews, the odd convenient leak and more, but something they’ve managed to keep under wraps until now is the size of the game.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s File Size

Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Why does it matter, I hear you ask? Well, for a number of reasons; from wanting to ensure you have enough space on your PlayStation 5, especially in this age of gigantic 100+GB games, it’s also useful for estimating the time it’ll take to get on your console, although for the most part pre-loading has removed this worry for most. The biggest reason though, would be the rough indication of the content of the game, and with all the promises that has been made about increased map sizes, new mission types and more, the file size of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is being scrutinized almost as much as Starfield’s was.

Content creators around the world are starting to announce they have received their Special Edition PlayStation 5’s, and with it, the size of the upcoming superhero game has leaked. Most fans will be glad to know that it comes in at 98GB, meaning it’s smaller than the Xbox’s Starfield’s size of 125GB, although most expected that to always be bigger with the type of content on offer.

Back in 2018 when the first game launched it was 67GB, whilst the semi-sequel/spin-off Miles Morales, was 38GB on its own, largely due to the smaller, self-contained map and story. So what does this mean for the upcoming superhero game?

Largely that not only is there more content, like the increased map size which will now include Queens, Brooklyn and Coney Island, but far more missions and hopefully more cut scenes. Of course, this is all conjecture and we’re comparing the PlayStation 4’s asset sizes to that of the far quicker, superior technology of the PlayStation 5, but this relatively minor leak seems to point towards a much bigger experience!

With what we do know about the upcoming wise-crackin’ superhero-swinging video game it is a fair assumption to think that a fair chunk of that file size is taken up by the game’s cutscenes, with Miles and Peter having to deal with the Symbiote Suit, Venom and Kraven, as well as returning to the story of Detective Yuri aka Wraith, as well as Peter’s personal issues.

There’s going to be plenty for us to sink our teeth into come October 20th, that’s for sure, but some fans on social media are worried that the size represents a disappointing amount of content – making the mistake of comparing it to Starfield in most cases – whereas others are rightly focusing on the size compared to other similar games, as well as pointing at the differences in hardware.
