After a mixed response to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there are rumors about a sequel. The film did end on a major cliffhanger that exposed Doctor Strange and his many versions. One of these versions is evil, and the ending teased another sequel and fans have been waiting.
Despite the presence of a cliffhanger, there might not be a sequel due to the criticism Marvel is facing currently. There are constant rumors about the release date and other details about the project, yet there is no official announcement made by the MCU.
Doctor Strange 3 is to be helmed by Sam Raimi
Co-host Jeff Sneider said during a part of the Hot Mic Podcast that he thinks Raimi will return to helm the third entry in the Doctor Strange trilogy. Sneider made it plain that he was not endorsing Raimi’s comeback, but he suggested that it was pretty obvious.
The sequel made close to one billion dollars in Box Office Collections, this itself might be enough motivation for the MCU to push out another film. Completing the trilogy with Raimi might not be a bad idea either as the director has helmed some of the most successful films in the MCU like Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As exciting as these rumors are for Doctor Strange fans, they do not fall in line with Bob Iger aka Robert Iger, the CEO of Disney.
Bob Iger reveals that MCU will focus on Quality, not Quantity
Bob Iger talked about the excessive volume of stories MCU has been producing recently. He addressed the criticism of the lack of quality which might be a result of the increase in quantity. He shared,
“There are 7,000 characters, there are a lot more stories to tell. What we have to look at Marvel is not necessarily the volume of Marvel stories we’re telling but how many times we go back to the well on certain characters. Sequels typically work well for us. Do you need a third and a fourth, for instance, or is it time to turn to other characters?”
Iger continued,
“There’s nothing in any way inherently off in terms of the Marvel brand. I think we just have to look at what characters and stories we’re mining. If you look at the trajectory of Marvel in the next five years, there will be a lot of newnesses. We’re going to turn back to the Avengers franchise with a whole new set of Avengers, for example.”
These statements do not stand in favor of a Doctor Strange sequel, especially because the sequel did not fair well with the critics and was condemned for its lack of quality. Iger promises more quality content in the future and some new Avengers as well. We can already see younger heroes taking the baton from the senior ones. This might be a step in the right direction and will gear the franchise toward Iger’s vision.
