The 2018 horror sci-fi A Quite Place from writer-director John Krasinski, emitted piercing silent screams and managed to make a $341M smash-hit at the box office. Grabbing attention and global appreciation, director Krasinski had no plans to return with further sequels, following the perfect ending of the 2018 movie.
However, during a podcast interview, John Krasinski claimed to be “Jedi mind tricked” into saying yes to the thriller sequel A Quiet Place 2. Thus, coming up with a brainstorming idea of creating an effective and engrossing follow-up, Krasinski along with his co-star/wife Emily Blunt delivered the $631M franchise sequel.
John Krasinski Had No Plans For A Quiet Place Sequel
The 2018 movie, A Quiet Place, took Hollywood by surprise when it pulled $341M worldwide at the box office, over its modest $17M budget. Becoming one of the most highly acclaimed horror films, the John Krasinski-directed movie graced its overwhelmingly fresh RT rating.
Thus, it’s no wonder that Paramount Pictures further capitalized with a sequel released in 2021. However, writer-director John Krasinski confirmed that he had no plans of making a sequel after creating the 2018 masterpiece. During an interview with The Big Picture podcast, Krasinski mentioned how he was tricked into making a sequel by his producer.
“After like three weeks he was like, ‘Why don’t you just write this and then we’ll get another filmmaker?’ and of course, Jedi mind tricked me into signing on to the sequel” John Krasinski mentioned.
Unwilling to stretch the story too far, John Krasinski simply wanted to celebrate the success of his 2018 movie and move on with other projects. However, when he was ultimately tricked into making a sequel, the Marvel star mentioned how he planned for a non-sequel story, along with his wife/co-star Emily Blunt.
John Krasinski Turned Part Two Into A Non-sequel Story
While several synonyms floating around for sequels, in the world of filmmaking, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt decided to turn the second installment of A Quiet Place into an elegant non-sequel story. Calling it “the second book in a series”, the couple simply described the continuation of the story as not quite like a sequel.
“It was actually Emily, of course, who articulated it better than me. She said the same thing, it was like, ‘No way, don’t do a second one,’ and then I pitched her my idea and she was like, ‘So you’re definitely doing that.’ She said, ‘But it’s not a sequel. It’s the second book in a series,’” John Krasinski stated.
Further, discussing his approach to the second film, Krasinski mentioned A Quiet Place 2 won’t be a classic sequel. He purposefully mentioned how he won’t be focusing on the typical hero/villain story to bring the second part into fruition, as he believes, “that’s where a lot of sequels go wrong”.
While the MCU star mentioned “tinkering with an idea for a few months and it just started to percolate,” his team was happy with it. Thus, after months of delay due to the pandemic, Krasinski and Blunt came together onscreen for their non-sequel sequel, A Quiet Place 2 on 28th May 2021.
