A little-known fact about Captain America star Chris Evans is that his brother, Scott, is gay. The actor keeps his home life close to him, and as much as possible, away from the scrutinizing eyes of the public. It does seem a bit contradicting when he spoke about his brother in an interview and outed him in public even before he came out of the closet.
Evans proudly supports the LGBTQ+ community, and he has been quite vocal about it. In many of his interviews, the Knives Out star believes that gay marriage is a civil right and that people should not be denied such privilege. Now, that’s something Captain America would say!
Chris Evans Accidentally Outed His Gay Brother In An Online Publication
In a 2009 interview with The Advocate, the Ghosted actor revealed that his younger brother, Scott, is gay and even shared how he came out to him:
“Yes, I do have a gay brother. I’m down with the gays. Mostly I’m hanging out with him and his gay buddies, who are f**king hilarious. They’re the funniest people I know.”
Chris Evans said that Scott first confessed to their mother and sister. It was his first year at NYU, and the brothers spent the day together driving to the city and having some beers before the revelation happened:
“I was driving him back to New York City for school. We spent the whole day together, got to the city, had some beers in my hotel room, got into a really great talk, and he came out. I was so glad that he did. That’s got to be a difficult transition, but I come from the most liberal household you have ever heard of.”
Scott’s orientation was only known to a few, and his brother outing him publicly caused a lot of speculations, with Evans getting a lot of flak for what he did. In another interview with The Advocate, Scott remarked:
“He outed me publicly. I outed me when I was 19, but he outed me publicly… it was The Advocate that the article came out where he told my story, and when the article came out, he got a lot of flak for it from a lot of his friends who said, ‘I can’t believe you did that!’”
The Gray Man actor freaked out so bad he immediately called Scott and asked if he was upset about the interview. Thankfully, he was okay with it and shared that he was happy to know his brother was comfortable enough to talk about it.
Scott Evans Defends Older Brother After His Interview Drew Criticism
Scott Evans talked about the incident in an interview with Attitude. A fellow TV personality, he has been doing soap operas as a gay actor when Chris Evans did the interview. He had been out for a while, though he never talked about it in the open:
“I know a lot of people in the business that are still closeted, and I know a lot of people that don’t like to talk about it because it does affect your jobs. And people say it’s better now. It’s not. It’s progressed, but it’s not better. But I cared more about my own mental health and my own personal wellbeing, and so I was out.”
Finally, Scott defended his brother from the bashers who criticized his interview:
“The only reason it seemed like he outed me is because he is in the public eye. Everybody that knew me, knew. I have nothing to hide. If you met me in person, you know.”
Scott assured fans that he has a unique relationship with Chris being each other’s first friends, and he knows that his older brother always got his back no matter what.
