It’s always an uphill battle for films adapted from video games to flourish among the audience; with the grueling pressure of doing justice to the source material, the success of the project, more often than not, is a shot in the dark. Fortunately enough for Uncharted, it managed to dodge a miserable fate after a raging victory at the box office whilst simultaneously securing a name for itself in the good books of fans and critics. While there were some disappointing reviews of the movie adaptation, Uncharted was, for the most part, a box office triumph. But was it prosperous enough to spawn a sequel?
Uncharted 2 – Mark Wahlberg’s Two Cents on A Potential Sequel
Adapted from the action-adventure video game of the same name, Ruben Fleischer’s Uncharted made a mighty splash at the box office after grossing $401.7 million globally on a budget of $120 million. With an ensemble cast comprising Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Sophia Ali, and Rudy Pankow, Uncharted hit a milestone by getting crowned as the 6th highest-grossing video game film of all time.
As is with any other successful venture, the question of a potential sequel is always looming in the background. And given the fame and recognition that Uncharted garnered, the prospect of a second installment seemed quite a lucrative one. But Wahlberg made it crystal clear that he would only return for a second film under two major conditions. In an interview with PinkVilla, when Wahlberg, 51, was asked whether he’d be open to coming back for a sequel, the actor revealed that he’d never been particularly thrilled about the “sequel business.”

While he may have made a Ted sequel and starred in a Transformers sequel, which was only due to contract obligations, he wouldn’t mind making Uncharted 2 so long as the fans want it and it has the potential to surpass its predecessor. “If the fans really love the movie and they want another one and there is that demand, and we can make it better than the first, then I would because I’m not really in the sequel business,” Wahlberg stated.
Will There Be Uncharted 2?
The film had a gala time during its opening, amassing more than $100 million in just one weekend coupled with a 90% positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s safe to say that Uncharted was soaring high in the sky right off the bat. In fact, its success rejoiced Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman to the extent that he declared it to be a “new hit movie franchise,” as reported by Deadline. Despite the obvious implication of introducing more films in the adventure series, however, there haven’t been any concrete updates on a sequel.
The first film had been in the works for nearly 15 lengthy years at Sony before it hit the cinemas back in 2022. So, even if the sequel does get a green light, it probably won’t be on the big screens anytime soon. But, one can hope.
Uncharted can be streamed on Netflix.
