Apart from holding his own amid tough competition, Wahlberg has now created a record by becoming the highest paid Netflix actor for his film Spenser Confidential which released in 2020. Despite the film receiving lukewarm responses from critics and audiences, The Shooter star reportedly earned a whopping 30 million dollars for his role in the action- comedy directed by Peter Berg.
With this hefty payday, Mark Wahlberg has officially surpassed his Hollywood colleague Ryan Reynolds who was earlier the highest paid actor on Netflix for his film 6 Underground for which he earned 27 million dollars. A significant reason for the Father Stu star gaining the top spot was due to the fact that Will Smith’s Bright 2 never saw the light of day. Smith who was supposed to take home a staggering 35 million dollars for the film, ended up losing the opportunity owing to his slapgate scandal at the Oscars.
Mark Wahlberg’s Spenser Confidential 2 Is In The Works
In Spenser Confidential, Wahlberg played a Boston cop who ended up in prison after assaulting one of his superior officers. Despite the Netflix film not faring too well, Wahlberg’s performance ensured that he went laughing all the way to the bank with a huge payday. Spenser Confidential is the fifth collaboration between director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg. The two had also worked together on Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day, and Mile 22. Berg hoped to continue his collaboration with Wahlberg for many more years and said,
“I’m sure Mark and I will be 85, 90 years old making movies together.“We love working together.”
True to his words, the Berg-Walhberg association has continued with the announcement by the director that Spenser Confidential will have a sequel. Barring the criticisms, the film was still one of the most popular movies on Netflix and that encouraged the director to proceed with writing a sequel. Spenser Confidential 2 is officially under production and details of its release will be announced in the months to come.
