But it’s not just Barbie who is running in the race to be on top, as many other highest-grossing films of this year compete for the same. However, Barbie has surpassed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and is now the second-highest-grossing movie of 2023.

Barbie‘s box office success becomes a threat to big franchises

The color of success looks pink, as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie occupies second place in the list of highest-grossing films of the year. Gerwig’s film was previously number three, but in a few weeks, it gained the number two position after surpassing Chris Pratt‘s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

James Gunn directed the film, which grossed around 845 million dollars worldwide, and its impressive box office collection made it unbeatable until Barbie came into the picture. Gerwig’s film proved to be a threat to Pratt’s movie, as soon as it took over its place and ranked second in the list.

Currently, there are three movies at the top of the highest-grossing films of 2023, and they are The Super Mario Bros., Barbie, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Looking at Barbie’s rapid success, it can be said that the film might come on top soon, leaving behind the $1.3 billion grossing film The Super Mario Bros. Until now, the Mattel doll-based film has been doing tremendously well and will soon hit the $1 billion mark globally.

The upcoming weeks might see a rise in the figures of the film’s box office collection.

The reason behind the success of Greta Gerwig’s film

For those who haven’t seen the movie yet, spoilers are ahead. Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie features Margot Robbie in the lead role. The movie is based on the life of Barbie, who lives happily with her friends in ‘Barbie Land’.

Initially, what seems like a lovely fairy tale is a satire on society, very cleverly depicted by the director. The purpose of the film is to tell its audience that Barbie isn’t a superficial doll who lives happily in her realm; rather, the film focuses on a journey of self-discovery following an existential crisis.

Moreover, the film’s agenda is to criticize the unrealistic beauty standard and to embrace ourselves as we are. The empowering tale of Barbie is the reason why people supported the film, and it’s doing well at the box office.

Barbie is running in theaters worldwide.
