While Ryan Reynolds is currently making headlines with his upcoming MCU movie Deadpool 3, let’s recall another of his action sci-fi that was supposed to come out by 2023. Following the sizable hit of Free Guy in 2021, director Shawn Levy and Reynolds were supposed to collaborate for Free Guy 2.
Unfortunately, Free Guy 2 failed to hit the theatres, because of one issue. During a conversation with Collider, Shawn Levy revealed how Margot Robbie’s Barbie impacted the release of Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy 2. Creating a nightmarish spot for Reynolds, Robbie’s 2023 blockbuster forced Levy to rethink his sequel.
Margot Robbie’s Barbie Impacted The Release Of Free Guy 2
After Ryan Reynolds’ 2021 movie Free Guy turned into a smashing hit for Disney and 20th Century Studios, filmmaker Shawn Levy recalled being asked to start making a sequel, on the same weekend of its theatrical release. Apparently, 20th Century Studios was reportedly too excited to turn Reynolds’ video game movie into a franchise.
However, although the director along with Ryan Reynolds began working on the sequel, Free Guy 2, Levy shared some recent bad news with fans during his conversation with Collider. “I think [a sequel] is definitely not assured.” the filmmaker began discussing the status of Free Guy 2.
“We are developing a sequel, but the truth is that you now have Barbie that has obviously left a mark about a character in a fictional world who comes to self-awareness. So, we’re only gonna make Free Guy 2 if it’s different than the first movie and if it’s different from other movies.”
Apparently, Barbie and Free Guy 2, has a lot of crossover between the themes. Thus, despite fans’ appreciation for the 2021 prequel, Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds have been holding back the release of its sequel. Facing tough competition from Margot Robbie‘s Barbie, which turned into a 2023 blockbuster, Levy is therefore trying to work on the script and make it different and worthy.
Shawn Levy And Ryan Reynolds Have Two Other Projects
Although Margot Robbie’s Barbie gravely impacted the release of Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy 2 due to their massive similarities, it is good to know that Shawn Levy is trying to come up with a fresh concept and storyline for the audiences. Further, despite the bad news Reynolds and Levy are both busy with other upcoming projects.
Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds have two other big projects where they are collaborating apart from Free Guy 2. The famous duo is currently working on MCU’s Deadpool 3, featuring Hugh Jackman. Further, they also have a comedy called Boy Band, stacked in line, for development and release.
Currently, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 3 is making headlines for the hype it created among fans over its X-Men cameos, brilliant storyline, and several Easter eggs. Fans are holding their breath and have high hopes for the upcoming MCU movie, especially after major superhero movies and franchises failed to impress and turned into box-office catastrophes.
