Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s recent release Barbie has become one of the biggest releases of the year. The film has already become a commercial success, with the numbers growing every day. The film is based on the story of Mattel’s fashion dolls which were quite popular in the 90’s era. The lead actress is getting love and appreciation from fans for her excellent portrayal of the character. However, Margot Robbie was not the first choice for the role.
It would be difficult to imagine any other actress playing the lead role of Barbie in the film after the fantastic performance of the actress. However, before casting her, there were a few other names who could have replaced the star.
Amy Schumer or Anne Hathaway could have replaced Margot Robbie in Barbie
Trainwreck star Amy Schumer was initially announced as the lead in 2016 but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, as per Variety.
Amy Schumer shared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen,
“I think we said it was a scheduling conflict, that’s what we said. But yeah, it really was just, like, creative differences. But you know what? There’s like a new team behind it, and it looks like it’s very feminist and cool. So, I will be seeing that movie.”
She added,
“The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”
After Schumer’s departure, The Princess Diaries actress signed up to play the role in 2018. The film was going to release in 2020, but when its date of release was postponed, she too backed out from the project. Deadline later confirmed that Anne Hathaway was no longer part of the film Barbie.
Margot Robbie on playing the lead in Barbie
In a conversation with The New York Times, Margot Robbie opened up about taking the role of Barbie. She shared,
“She is so iconic, but she’s also so complicated,”
“There’s been real issues with Barbie over the years and there’s been real love. The conversation has kept evolving. I think ultimately it is a conversation we’re having about ourselves, but it’s easy to put it on Barbie.”
Robbie produced Barbie with her husband, Tom Ackerley, and their company, LuckyChap Entertainment.
Robbie further added about her vision for Barbie,
“One of the first things Greta said was that she wanted Barbie to go on the classic hero’s journey, like the Buddha’s journey to enlightenment. And I was reading the Joseph Campbell book ‘The Hero With a Thousand Faces” at the time and I was like, “I know exactly what you mean.’ I hadn’t played a character that’s been on that classic hero’s journey before. So that was really interesting.”
In the film, Barbie and Ken set forth on a journey of self-discovery when she is suddenly faced with an existential crisis.
Barbie is running in theatres worldwide.
