Margot Robbie’s starring film Barbie created much hype way before its release. The highly anticipated film was released on July 21, 2023. The film created a blast at the box office and received positive reviews from the audience. However, not everyone is in favor of the film, as there is a fraction of the audience that has highly criticized it for various reasons.
Among them is American columnist Ben Shapiro, who made a 43-minute-long video and criticized the film. His video created a buzz on the internet, but surprisingly, the lead protagonist of the film, Robbie, hasn’t acknowledged this criticism yet.
Margot Robbie keeps mum on the Barbie criticism
Margot Robbie’s latest film, Barbie, received immense love from the audience. The proof of its success is its incredible box office collection. Where everything was going hunky-dory for Greta Gerwig’s film, suddenly there was a wave of criticism.
Recently, renowned columnist Ben Shapiro condemned the film. The columnist went to the extent that to show his aversion to the film, he made a 43-minute YouTube video where he said,
“My producers dragged me to see ‘Barbie’ and it was one of the most woke movies I have ever seen.”
Shapiro despised the movie to the extent that he threw the Barbie doll into a trash can and called the movie a “piece of sh*t.”.
This criticism led to an uproar on the internet from Barbie fans who slammed Shapiro for going too far. However, surprisingly, the lead protagonist of the film, Margot Robbie, hasn’t addressed this topic yet.
Although the director of the film, Greta Gerwig, acknowledged this trolling and responded to it, during an interview, Gerwig addressed the backlash the film received for being “woke”. The filmmaker said,
“There’s a lot of passion. My hope for the movie is that it’s an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of the things that aren’t necessarily serving us as either women or men. I hope that in all of that passion if they see it or engage with it, it can give them some of the relief that it gave other people.”
The theme of the film is based on feminism, which has enraged some conservatives.
Controversies surfacing over Margot Robbie’s film Barbie
Ben Shapiro isn’t the only one who has criticized Barbie. As the wife of Republican congressman Matt Gaetz, Ginger Luckey Gaetz is also not in favor of the film. She said that the movie
“neglects to address any notion of faith or family, and tries to normalise the idea that men and women can’t collaborate positively”.
United States Senator Ted Cruz called the film a Chinese propaganda movie, even though he hasn’t watched the film yet.
Amidst all this backlash, Barbie continues to successfully play in theaters worldwide.
