Margot Kidder starred as Lois Lane in 1978’s Superman opposite Christopher Reeve. To date, she remains one of the best actresses to star in the memorable role of Lois Lane in the iconic movie. Not only did she do a tremendous job, but her chemistry with Christopher Reeve was also a significant factor in their popularity.
Since then and way before, numerous actors have played Superman and Lois Lane, with the most recent being Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel. However, for Kidder, Reeve’s Superman remains the best movie to date, even better than Henry Cavill’s.
Margot Kidder Believes Christopher Reeve’s Superman Is The Best Movie To Date
Christopher Reeve would forever be remembered as one of the best, most accurate Superman to date. Ask fans and they would rightly say that he was born to play Superman. It was his convincing portrayal and remarkable ability to humanize the DC hero that still touches the heart of millions of fans, decades after his last Superman movie.
Even for his leading lady in the film, Margot Kidder, there has been no better Superman than Christopher Reeve and no better Superman movie. In an interview, she said that it was because of her movie’s comic book accuracy that people still love it decades later.
“No, they always go back because that film was better written and directed. They go back to them because they were so much truer to the comic books. Kids learn the morality tale of Jesus in a way; a guy away from his dad, floundering around on Earth and is this purely good person. Superman responds to women by saving them, saves the children and beats up the bad guys, if you will.”
She blames the subsequent movie’s aim to appeal to the younger generation as the main reason why movies like Henry Cavill‘s Man of Steel are not as good as Christopher Reeve’s Superman.
Margot Kidder Was Not Sure Christopher Reeve Could Play Superman
When the late actor, Christopher Reeve first came on for the screen set, nobody could have thought that he could ever play Superman. But months later when he came back on set, she was convinced as was the rest of the world that nobody could ever be as good as Reeve.
When asked if she thought the Somewhere in Time star could be a good Superman, she replied
“Not at the screen test, no. He was really thin at the time. He was thin and dorky. And then he went to the gym and worked like a son of a gun and became Superman. It was his first movie.”
Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of Superman still remains iconic, and so does his legacy as the real-life Superman after his tragic accident in 1995.
