Whether it is the DC Universe or its rival Marvel Cinematic Universe, the multiverse has been a hot topic lately. We are not going to lie, it is a different feeling seeing your favorite superheroes come together in a film. However, actor Michael Shannon does not seem to resonate with the same.
Michael Shannon will be revisiting his villainous character, General Zod, in the upcoming and heavily anticipated, The Flash. He previously played the character in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and needless to say, fans are excited to have him back. In a recent interview, Michael Shannon stated that he just was not as satisfied with his return as he should’ve been, thanks to the multiverse aspect.
Michael Shannon Isn’t A Fan of the Multiverse
It’s exciting that you can now count the days to the release of The Flash on one hand. In just five days, the highly anticipated film will be released in the United States, bringing back some of our favorite superheroes. Appearing for an interview with Collider just a few days before the release, Michael Shannon talked about reprising the role of General Zod.
When asked if the return felt “different at all” since the character will be from a different timeline, Shannon stated that it was not satisfying enough for him.
“Yeah. I’m not gonna lie, it wasn’t quite satisfying for me, as an actor. These multiverse movies are like somebody playing with action figures. It’s like, ‘Here’s this person. Here’s that person. And they’re fighting!’”
He then stated that multiverse films, just like The Flash, do not possess the in-depth character study situation that Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel did. But then again, he is well aware of the fact that The Flash is not really about General Zod.
“It’s not quite the in-depth character study situation that I honestly felt Man of Steel was. Whether people think that’s crazy or not, I don’t even care. I really felt like Man of Steel was actually a pretty sophisticated story. I feel like The Flash is too, but it’s not Zod’s story. I’m basically there to present a challenge.”
While most of the fandom is all for the multiverse, Shannon represents the section that is not a fan of seeing the superhero world collide. Which part of the fandom are you from?

Michael Shannon Praises Ezra Miller
In the same interview, Shannon was asked about what the fans should be looking forward to in the film. He very candidly replied that the film, for him, was all about the lead actor, Ezra Miller. He stated that Miller’s performance in the film is “pretty crazy” and that they pulled it off successfully.
“Honestly, to me, it’s all about Ezra [Miller]. I just think Ezra is a fascinating performer and actor. I can’t wait to see this performance. It’s a huge challenge. I don’t wanna give anything away, but what Ezra has to do in this movie is pretty crazy, and I think [they’re] up for the task. I know a lot of times, with movies like this, people are excited about the big set pieces or the effects, but for me, it’s always about performance. I don’t care whether it’s an Ingmar Bergman film or the Avengers. It’s always about performance.”
Now that Shannon has hyped up Miller’s performance, we are even more excited to see how the events will unfold in The Flash! Don’t forget to mark your calendars!
The Flash releases in theatres on June, 16.
