“Makes me want to cry”: 2 Time Oscar Nominee Andrew Garfield Didn’t Feel Like Zendaya Was “Acting” in Euphoria

Zendaya was already famous thanks to the MCU’s Spider-Man films, but Euphoria let her spread her acting wings in a way she had never been able to before. The role of Rue looked taxing and heartbreaking to do. However, Zendaya received plenty of acting accolades for portraying the harrowing character perfectly.

Among those praising her was Andrew Garfield. The 2 times Oscar-nominated actor in the Best Actor category is regarded as an acting powerhouse in his own right. From Tick, Tick… Boom! to Hacksaw Ridge and more, he has proven his mettle. He admitted that Zendaya’s performance in Euphoria moved him to tears and he couldn’t handle the emotions.

During 2022’s Actors on Actors Variety interview, Andrew Garfield and Zendaya indulged each other in questions. “Makes me want to cry. I didn’t feel like there was any acting. It felt like you were living through something in such an authentic way.”

Zendaya answered that the character of Rue was a combination of various experiences of different people. So she tried to humanize her as much as possible. The actress said:

“It’s hard to say that there’s any specific process for that… Rue has become an amalgamation of my experiences, his (Sam Levinson’s) experiences and our collective pain — and seeing through the eyes of an addict. I think the approach was to try it as human as possible without ever shying away from the devastation and the ugliness of what that can create.”

Since both of them had starred together in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the conversation obviously shifted toward that as well. Garfield revealed that he had a blast shooting with her and also clarified what that iconic catch scene meant to him.

He said:

“It’s about brotherhood. And I love the idea that maybe Tom’s Peter would’ve suffered the same fate as Andrew’s Peter if Andrew hadn’t have somehow come into that universe and learned from the mistakes of the past — and made sure that my younger brother and his love didn’t have the same fate.”

The Eyes of Tammy Faye actor then lamented the fact that they didn’t share any more significant scenes together. But can they meet again in Avengers: Secret Wars? It will be interesting if they can interact again.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is on Starz, and Euphoria is on HBO Max.
