Some characters live rent-free in our heads and hearts forever; some for their personality, some for their appearance, and some for their unique voice. Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Geralt in The Witcher fits into all three categories.
While credit for his character’s personality and appearance goes to the creators, credit for the character’s unique voice goes to Cavill. However, during an interview, the actor explained that his unique Geralt voice wasn’t planned.
Henry Cavill claims that his unique voice in The Witcher wasn’t planned
The Netflix drama series The Witcher, featuring Henry Cavill, has become a popular television series. Throughout his career, the actor has appeared in various films, showcasing his versatility. When we consider his acting career, his skills are beyond doubt. However, his contribution to the Netflix series goes beyond acting, as his unique voice for Geralt added strength to the character.
During an interview, Cavill explained how this unique voice for Geralt came about. He revealed that when he auditioned for the role of Geralt, he used his normal voice, but during the final shot, Cavill accidentally used a different voice. The actor then realized that this improvised voice suited the character better and decided to stick with it. Cavill said,
“I think it was Episode 3, actually, King Foltest, that scene where I lock everyone out of the room and walk back in. I didn’t do that intentionally. That happened by accident… And then afterward, I was like, ‘Oh my god, I just played a whole scene in the wrong voice.’ And I realized that the voice made a lot of things sit better when it came to the delivery of certain lines and the delivery of certain dialogue. And I thought, ‘I actually kind of prefer this.'”
Cavill’s experiment worked out well, as his portrayal of Geralt was highly appreciated by fans.
Henry Cavill maintained the authenticity of his character while giving it a unique touch
The fantasy drama, The Witcher, is based on a book series of the same name. Before the series was adapted into a television show, it was developed into a fantasy action role-playing game series by CD Projekt Red. In the video game series, Geralt of Rivia was voiced by Doug Cockle. With his distinctive voice, Cockle perfectly captured the character’s personality.
However, in the live-action adaptation of the books, Henry Cavill took on the role. While portraying the character, the actor made sure to capture the essence of Geralt without trying to imitate Cockle’s original voice. Cavill explained that he wanted his voice to be distinct from Cockle’s voice work so that he could put his own stamp on the character while still respecting another professional’s work.
