Actor Robert Pattinson was hired to play the role of Preston Teagardin in director Antonio Campos’ 2020 movie The Devil All the Time. The movie required most of the stars to master the Southern drawl and they got a dialect coach to help them out, however, Pattinson didn’t do that.

The actor mastered the accent on his own and didn’t tell anyone about it until the cameras rolled. Before the shot, he rehearsed his accent in front of Campos, who was then so impressed that he called Pattinson a “mad genius who can do anything.

Learning a new accent isn’t new for Pattinson as he has done it for several movies throughout his career. Pattinson, who is originally British, mastered the Queens accent before working in Good Time (2017). The role in the movie was specifically written for him by directors Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie.

In 2008’s Little Ashes, Pattinson mastered a Spanish accent by watching interviews and copying ex-Liverpool Football club manager Rafa Benitez.

In The Rover (2014), Pattinson came up with an unfamiliar southern-American accent. Fans also got to see an old-timey country accent in Damsel (2018).

The Lighthouse (2019) is undoubtedly one of Pattinson’s best works. In the movie, he showcased a New England accent that perfectly went well with his character of Thomas Howard.

Pattinson has also tried a French accent in The King (2019), however, that was somewhat of a failure as it became more of a joke. Pattinson himself once explained that the idea stemmed from a joke as he was just goofily practicing his French accent.

Whenever Pattinson is offered to play a character, he dives deep into their life. Before filming Good Time, Pattinson actually went around New York and worked odd jobs to understand his character.
