“Lying and loving don’t go together”: Will Smith’s Controversial Views On Marriage Did Not Age Well As Actor Claimed “You don’t necessarily need to be a good husband”

Will Smith’s Controversial Views On Marriage Did Not Age Well As Actor Claimed “You don’t necessarily need to be a good husband”

Will Smith is a terrific actor and there’s absolutely no doubt about it. But despite having such an incredible career over the span of the three-plus decades that he had worked in the industry and a fan following of millions, thanks to his amazing works like The Pursuit of Happyness and I Am Legend, the Bad Boys actor has been surrounded by much controversy over his tendentious views on marriage.

That being said, his views on marriage certainly did not age well if not worse, following his controversial claim of how ‘one doesn’t necessarily need to be a good husband’ after the release of his 2015 movie, Focus.

Starring as a con man in Focus, Will Smith had to play a rather cynic character who was battling his former lover and fellow hustler, the part of which was undertaken by Margot Robbie. But even after his movie shoot ended, it seems that the Bad Boys star’s character’s cynicism rubbed off him, judging from his controversial claim on marriage that he made afterward. He said,

“Reality almost does not matter at all… You need them to perceive you as a loving husband; you don’t necessarily need to be one.”

However, he also contradictorily argued about how lying and loving don’t go together either, further saying,

“Lying and loving don’t go together. Until we’re willing to show we have warts and are scared and are not all the things we’re working so hard to be perceived as – until we’re willing to let it all go and be authentic – you can’t actually have the very thing you’re doing it for, which is love and connection with other human beings.”

Though his view on marriage was a rather controversial one, this wasn’t the first time Will Smith had been caught up in tendentious stuff like this.

Since some of his movies in a sequence that he genuinely liked before Focus didn’t receive the appreciation they deserved, Will Smith did get severely shaken by them, especially his sci-fi blockbuster After Earth. However, after reassessing his career and his choices, the actor found himself on the true road to happiness, where he didn’t have to worry if his movie was actually a box office hit or not.

“A thing got broken in my mind. It’s been an absolute necessity that the movie be a blockbuster, but I think I’m going to start moving out of that and finding more danger in my artistic choices. I completely released the concept of goal orientation and got into path orientation – this moment, this second, these people, this interaction,” he explained. “It is a huge relief for me to not care whether or not Focus is number one or number 10 at the box office. I’ve already gained everything I could have possibly hoped for by meeting the people and the creation of what we did together.”

Nonetheless, while the Will Smith starrer movie Focus received mixed reviews from critics worldwide, it did end up making $158 million at the box office against its budget of $50 million, making it a box office success.
