Freaky Friday star Lindsay Lohan is reportedly gearing up for her biggest Hollywood return as Walt Disney Pictures plans to develop a sequel to the 2003 comedy film. She will be reunited with Jamie Lee Curtis, who also starred in the movie twenty years ago.
Curtis played Tess Coleman, the widowed mom of Lohan’s Anna. Their relationship gets challenged after both of them wake up to find they have switched bodies. Freaky Friday was a huge success, earning $160.8 million against a budget of $26 million. It has also gained a cult following and was considered one of the classic early 2000s movies.
Lindsay Lohan And Jamie Lee Curtis Reunite For Freaky Friday Sequel
In an interview with New York Times, Jamie Lee Curtis hinted at a possible sequel to Freaky Friday.
“People wanted to know if there was going to be another Freaky Friday. Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made.’”
In earlier reports, Lohan also expressed interest in reprising her iconic role:
“Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be. We would only make something that people would absolutely adore.”
Freaky Friday is based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel, with Mark Waters helming the 2003 film adaptation. The sequel’s script will be penned by Elyse Hollander. So far, only Lohan and Curtis are reportedly joining the cast.
Lohan was one of the biggest teen stars in the early 2000s, and the follow-up movie will mark her biggest comeback to filmmaking. Having starred in The Parent Trap and portraying two people, the actress reflected on her role in Freaky Friday:
“As an 11-year-old, The Parent Trap felt so big to me. I threw myself into everything: accents, green screens, playing two people. So I felt comfortable after that. Freaky Friday felt different because I was going through all of the phases of a 16-year-old.”
Meanwhile, Curtis revealed she signed on for the role only a few days before she arrived on set:
“Had I had all the time in the world to prepare, I don’t think it would’ve been so good. I just had to be in my body. I was also newly sober and I was able to have a community within the movie-work world. That was a big deal for me.”
The Halloween star also confessed working with Lindsay Lohan was easy and comfortable and that she took the Mean Girls actress immediately under her wing.
Freaky Friday Franchise Had Several Adaptations
There had been numerous iterations of the Freaky Friday franchise over the years. Disney’s 2003 film was, in fact, the third adaptation. The story was first brought to the screen in the ‘70s followed by another movie intended for television in 1995. A reboot from Disney Channel was produced in 2018.
Despite the latest film remake, Disney will reportedly bring back the original pair for the long-overdue sequel. So far, there is no scheduled release date for the project.
