Henry Cavill is no longer around the debate about Superman as the DCU is heading toward a new direction under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. However, the Man of Steel actor has always been open to the idea of playing a more hopeful version of the character. Despite being known for playing a more grounded and darker version of the Kryptonian, the actor didn’t back away from expressing his love towards the source material.
Just like The Witcher, Cavill also shares a deep respect for Superman’s source material and once expressed his desire to portray the version of Superman that is more in line with the comics.
Henry Cavill was always open to the idea of playing a more comic-accurate Superman
Though Henry Cavill shares a deep respect for Zack Snyder’s more grounded take on the Kryptonian and enjoyed playing a darker version of the character, the actor once shared his desire to play a more hopeful and confident Superman, with which the world fell in love. While speaking with Collider, the actor expressed his desire by stating,
“I would love to have the opportunity to play the Superman that we all know and love from the comics, as a continuation of his development and we see the hero. That would be really, really exciting for me because there is an opportunity to tell a lot of interesting story there.”
But even before the actor was able to live his dream of playing a more comic-accurate version of the character, Henry Cavill was eventually axed from the role of Superman after James Gunn arrived at the helm of DC Universe.
Justice League was the first movie where Henry Cavill felt like portraying the real Superman
Despite making his debut as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel, Cavill believes that in only one movie he was able to portray the original Superman. Even though the Enola Holmes 2 actor has been pretty outspoken about his love for Zack Snyder and commended his vision, the actor felt that he became the true Superman in Justice League. He explained the situation by stating,
“In my opinion, this is the first time we see Superman in truth. We have seen the origin story of Superman. We have seen the downfall and doubt of Superman. And finally, with his rebirth, we see the true Superman. The Superman who is confident and sure, and full of hope and joy,”
Unfortunately, Henry Cavill will not get to live his dream of portraying a more comic-accurate Superman. Following James Gunn’s plans for Superman: Legacy, fans will be hopeful that the upcoming take on Superman might be one of the most truthful adaptations of the character in recent times.
Man of Steel is available to stream on HBO Max.
