Kirsten Dunst, who starred as Torrance Shipman in the cult classic Bring It On, once narrated the reason why she took a break from acting. Spider-Man’s Mary Jane Watson narrated how she endured immense pain while shooting Spider-Man 3 due to a bitter experience with a previous film. She felt like everyone was stamping on her.
Kirsten Dunst Wasn’t In The Right Frame Of Mind
Kirsten Dunst revealed in an interview how her brutal experience after filming Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette affected her performance in her last Spider-Man movie. Dunst, who starred as Mary Jane Watson alongside Tobey Maguire (Peter Parker), said:
“I was in a lot of pain while I was making Spider-Man 3. Afterwards, I was done with acting. I was so sick of giving myself to other people because I had nothing in my life that was all mine.”
The Jumanji actress opened up that her 2006 film, Marie Antoinette was a major reason why she faced so much pain. The historical drama didn’t receive the kind of response Coppola and Dunst anticipated. Not only this but she got booed for her performance. Dunst felt like “everyone was stamping” on her.
Kirsten Dunst Vowed To Save Her Future Children From The Pressure
Despite Marie Antoinette’s negative reception, Dunst’s career didn’t go for a toss, instead continued to flourish. But when she returned to acting, she wanted to do it her way. She shared that having grown up in the spotlight, she learned to resent how the “film industry was shaping” her as a person. Dunst said:
“It’s not a natural way to grow up, and acting was never a dream for me because it had always been a part of me. It was the only thing I knew –it was just my life.”
This was one of the reasons why Dunst vowed never to put her future children through the “pressure of cinema”. The German actress returned to acting with Melancholia in 2011, and the apocalyptic film drama earned her the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress. Not to mention, her Oscar nomination for Benedict Cumberbatch’s The Power of the Dog (2021).
Spider-Man 3 is available for streaming on Disney+.
