James Cameron created history with his 1997 romantic drama Titanic with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Portraying the love story of Rose and Jack on the sinking ship, the movie went on to become the first film to gross $1 billion at the box office. And Titanic held that place until the release of another Cameron movie in 2009, Avatar. Over the years, the film has become the fourth highest-grossing film in the world, as it still holds the same place in its fans’ heart and has the same impact on its audience.
However, one of the lead stars of the film seems to have altered her opinion about the blockbuster as the years went through. While promoting her second project with the Titanic director, Winslet shared an unpopular opinion about the 1997 romantic drama.
Kate Winslet Calls Titanic A Freak Random Thing
Kate Winslet has gained worldwide recognition for starring as Rose in James Cameron’s 1997 romantic drama. The movie became an all-time fan favorite and also landed the filmmaker his first Oscar for Best Director and the actress a nomination for Best Actress.
The Dressmaker star has also shared how eager she was to portray Rose DeWitt Bukater in the movie, and she did every possible thing to make sure she got the part. However, as she reunited with the director for Avatar: The Way of Water, she has termed the movie a “freak random fortunate thing.”
While talking to Josh Horowitz, Winslet came around discussing her daughter’s career. Her daughter, Mia Threapleton, is 22 and is slowly making her way into the industry. Winslet shared that when she was her age, she finished filming Titanic and got her first Oscar nomination for the 1996 film Sense and Sensibility.
She further shared that while she had achieved all that, her advice to the young actors is not to aspire to something similar for them as that was “just like a freak random fortunate thing” that happened to her a long time ago. Winslet also shared that although she could have been fortunate, she has also worked really hard as an actress.
Kate Winslet on Reuniting With James Cameron
Years after working together in the 1997 film Titanic, James Cameron and Kate Winslet reunited for the sequel of the highest-grossing film of all time, Avatar. The sequel followed Jake and Neytiri trying to survive with their family. Winslet joined the Avatar sequel as the free diver of the Metkayina, Ronal.
And The Reader star has shared that working with Cameron on both Titanic and Avatar: The Way of Water felt very different. “You couldn’t compare the two. The two films are so different,” she shared before adding, “These experiences were so far apart.”
Winslet also shared that both she and Cameron are very different now as they made Titanic a long time ago. She said that they have grown older and have learned a lot over the years as well. Followed by Titanic, they have also been trying to work together and finally got the opportunity in the 2022 film.
