'Just like R2 is for Star Wars': James Gunn Claims Rocket Is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s “Secret Protagonist” as Fans Troll Him

Ever since James Gunn has taken up the role of the co-CEO of DC Studios, we got to see many interesting things taking place, like the complete reboot of the franchise and the introduction of Chapter in the Studio. But Gunn also plays a crucial role in MCU as he is the current director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and has also directed the upcoming movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

It seems that James Gunn has grown a feeling towards the characters of the movie, especially Rocket, and has even stated in an interview that according to him Rocket plays a very important role for the Guardians and is regarded as the center character of the trilogy. It was mainly because of completing his story, that Gunn returned to direct the threequel as his last venture with the Guardians and with the MCU.

James Gunn Declares Rocket as the Secret Protagonist of the Guardians

In an interview with Total Films, James Gunn clearly mentioned that for him Rocket was the most important character from the Guardians and he would like to see it through now that he started and directed the rest of Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The director went on to add that he really felt Rocket’s story was kept hanging in the first two movies and was determined to give a proper ending, hence he returned to the MCU for directing a third and the last Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Though Gunn’s position at DC makes it quite hard for him to take up roles in different franchises, nonetheless he still returned for the threequel.

“The most important thing for me was Rocket’s story, and then, following that, everybody else. Rocket is the secret protagonist of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and has always been the center of it for me, and this is really fulfilling that.

The reason I came back, and decided to do this movie, was because I really felt like Rocket’s story needed to be told—and it was left hanging after Vol 2. So that’s the most important thing”

James Gunn was quite excited to work on the movie and looks like this time around Rocket will be the center character of the movie as we all saw in the trailer, though it does look like the movie will give a proper ending and sendoff to the Guardians, and it seems like the ending will be quite a heartfelt one. It was pointed out by Gunn that regardless of the plans for Phases 5 and 6 of MCU, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will work independently and will focus on filling the gaps of the characters, mainly Rocket.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Will Have a Couple of Deaths

It has become a trend that a character will die in a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, it was Groot in the first movie and Yondu in the second, both of then which supported the Guardians and it looks the third will also be the same, though the deaths might just be more than one. According to current situations, it is most likely that Rocket Raccoon and Drax the Destroyer will meet their end in the movie, and just to be clear the threequel will be a massive tear-jerker so keeping our tissues ready would be a wise decision.

It was reported that the movie will mainly focus on the Rocket’s past and all the suffering he had to go through to be what he is today. In the trailer, the scene where Rocket says “Pete, I’m done running, we’ll all fly away together, one last time, into the forever, and beautiful sky” is evident enough that the movie will be an absolute banger and Gunn has prepared the script thoroughly. While nothing is still set in stone, it is highly likely that this time too the Guardians will be losing their loved ones.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released in theatres on May 5, 2023.
