Ever since Steven Spielberg introduced Jurassic Park in 1993, audiences have become enthralled by the execution of concepts over the course of 4-movies. 2015’s Jurassic World, which served as the jumping-point for a new series, proved that the general audience still has appreciation and admiration for the franchise as it took home $1.67 billion despite possibly being less hyped for films such as Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.4 billion). Next summer’s sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, premiered it’s first official trailer at the beginning of the month and has audiences raising eyebrows about the supposed similarities to the first sequel of the Jurassic series The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997).
Over the course of the last few months, there have been many signs that Fallen Kingdom writer and director, Colin Trevorrow and J. A. Bayona, would be taking cues from The Lost World and even early video games such as Jurassic Park 2: The Chaos Continues (1995) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. However, there may not be as many similarities as we once thought before; YouTube interviewer, Sebas Tabany, recently spoke with Trevorrow about the ideas of the upcoming blockbuster and how the franchise will be taking a completely new direction with this film.
“It looks like it is (similar to The Lost World) because they all go to a fog-covered, scary island with dinosaurs on it, but it goes to a very, very different place than anyone expects,” the writer continued. “Really the heart and soul of the movie, the turn of the story, is not what we’ve shown in this trailer. It’s very much not like The Lost World.”
Many have speculated, and it is probably not too far off, that the dinosaurs will be removed from their habitat and placed into captivity to some extent on the mainland, but we have yet to see or hear of where they may be placed. Trevorrow also added that this film would see the progression of the overall story as opposed to a solo-episodic effort seen in each previous film.
“At the end of this movie, it’s not a cliffhanger, but it’s designed for people to want to know what’s going to happen next, whereas the earlier Jurassic Park movies had pretty clear definitive endings. They were much more episodic. In working with Derek Connolly, my co-writer, we were also thinking about where it was gonna go in the future.”
It may take another official trailer, or perhaps just waiting until the release, before we get any additional information on the direction Fallen Kingdom will take the Jurassic franchise. Life always finds a way.
