Oscar-winning actor Marlon Brando has appeared in some incredible movies throughout his acting career. The late actor has not just given some iconic performances; he was also known for his unique and sometimes outlandish ideas. The actor’s portrayal of Jor-El in the Superman film is one of the major roles of his acting career.
Although his contribution is not just limited to a mere appearance in the film, according to Mexican film producer Ilya Salkind, Brando also gave an eccentric idea to depict his character Jor-El, which ended up startling the producer.
Marlon Brando’s idea for Jor-El left Ilya Salkind startled
Earlier, during an interview, film producer Ilya Salkind revealed that Mardon Brando proposed a bizarre idea that left him speechless. According to Salkind, Brando suggested an unconventional idea for the depiction of his character Jor-El in the Superman film series. Brando wanted Jor-El to be represented as a suitcase or a green bagel that would speak with Brando’s voice. Salkind recalled,
“I was really young and I was sweating it out. I said ‘My God, this is finished, the movie will not happen…. The man will destroy everything. This is impossible. Jor-El will be a bagel.'”
Though Brando’s idea was laughed off, the actor had been known for his creative and sometimes outlandish ideas throughout his career.
Nevertheless, the producer of the film stuck to the original idea of Jor-El’s depiction, and Brando’s idea was obviously discarded. Brando’s character of Superman’s father, Jor-El, was an intellectual and authoritative figure who was an integral part of the Superman film legacy.
Marlon Brando’s Jor-El earned him a good amount of money
Marlon Brando‘s character Jor-El was not just a well-acclaimed character, but the Superman project landed him great fortune. Brando had a unique compensation deal with the Superman franchise that included a significant upfront payment and a percentage of the box office gross.
However, according to some sources, Brando was not compensated properly, hence he sued the producer of the film, Ilya Salkind. However, later, the dispute was settled between the two, as Salkind once claimed,
“Everything was settled and everyone got their money.”
Brando earned around $3.7 million upfront, plus 11.75% of the gross profits from the film. According to Salkind, the actor made $19 million in total.
