Even though the frontline DC universe has been struggling to stay afloat and is finally forwarding toward its reboot, the movies outside the realms of the mainline DC universe haven’t failed to impress the fans. And with the Joker sequel, involving Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, deep into its production, fans are assured that it will live up to the standards set by the first movie.
But it seems that apart from focusing on the twisted relationship between Harley Quinn and Joker, it is being reported that it will the first live-action entry, where they will emphasize Quinn being bisexual.
Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn reportedly bisexual in Joker: Folie à Deux
With the production of Joker: Folie à Deux picking up pace, it seems that the upcoming movie will reportedly emphasize on Harley Quinn’s sexuality. According to reports, Lady Gaga will be the first actress to portray a bisexual Harley Quinn in the medium of live-action. This report comes after Gaga’s character was spotted kissing an older woman on the sets of the Joker sequel.
Even though it does appear that her romance will be exclusive to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker in the sequel and will heavily focus on her deteriorating mental health. However, this gesture of her kissing an older woman, who is most probably looking like a supporter of Joker’s action in the movie, alludes that they’re not backing away from addressing one of Quinn’s most important traits.
The first actress to possibly portray a bisexual Harley Quinn in live-action
In comics, Harley Quinn’s sexuality has often played an important role in defining her as a character and has contributed to crafting one of her most memorable story arcs with Poison Ivy. Even though the character is openly addressed in the medium of animation, it still hasn’t been explored much in the medium of live-action.
Even though in Birds of Prey, some hints referred to Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn as bisexual, it wasn’t fully confirmed in the movie. However, it seems that there aren’t any such qualms in the case of Lady Gaga’s interpretation of the character, especially following her kiss with an extra on the sets of the sequel.
Though there aren’t any substantial updates about the movie’s plot, it will be exciting to see the grounded approach to the development of their twisted bond.
Joker: Folie à Deux is set to hit theatres on 4 October 2024.
