Marvel has some of the most bankable actors in Hollywood working for them. There was also news that Johnny Depp might be a part of the mightiest superhero team. The role he was rumored to play was Doctor Strange. Now, we all know that MCU settled for Benedict Cumberbatch in the role, and he is perfect for it. He was introduced as Doctor Strange in the solo movie in 2016. Then went on to reprise the role in two Avengers movies, Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the Doctor Strange sequel. But if the rumors are true we might have seen Johnny Depp play the role.
Johnny Depp might’ve been cast as Doctor Strange
According to the news, in 2014, Marvel was in discussion with Johnny Depp to play the role of Stephen Strange. Before he was charged with domestic violence or dealing with the defamation trials, he was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. He was also working already with Disney in one of the most popular franchises, The Pirates of The Caribbean. He was the beloved Captain Jack Sparrow.
The report said that Marvel Studios was looking for a new superhero to join the team of Iron Man, Thor, and other Avengers. The plan was to introduce a solo movie of the Master of the Mystic Arts before he joins the group. And the executives also talked to him among a few other actors, before finalizing Benedict Cumberbatch. But to think if Depp were to play that role, he would’ve done a fair job as the eccentric Doctor Strange.
Johnny Depp lost his roles due to the allegations against him
After their divorce in 2015, Amber Heard went to court and accused the actor of domestic violence. Though the case was later settled and the actors released a joint statement saying that the matter was settled. Also, the actress promised to donate the sum she received. But it was until the actress wrote an article in 2018 about being a public figure who experienced abuse. This led to The Sun calling him a “wife-beater.” This is why the actor sued his ex-wife for $50 million.
This has led to him being fired from roles in major franchises like Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts. Apart from that, the actor has lost a few other roles due to controversy.
