Like many high-profile stars from the industry, Depp has always been the first choice for many films that have gone on to become an icon in cinematic history. But due to some reason or other, they had declined the offer to become a part of the legacy. One such instance happened with the Pirates of the Caribbean star when he was approached by legendary director James Cameron himself to play the role of Jack Dawson in his blockbuster film Titanic.

Before the role went to Leonardo DiCaprio, a role that made him the legend of the industry that he is today, it was offered to Depp. And while he was interested to be a part of the project, due to the length of the script being 180 pages long, he lost interest and declined the film. But when he saw just how exceptional the film turned out, he said that turning down the role was his biggest mistake.

Along with that, Ryder was also being considered for the role of Rose Dewitt Bukater as they were in a very intense relationship when the casting was going in Cameron’s mind. But before the filming could commence, they both broke up in 1993. Therefore, she was taken out of the picture by the management as the director thought that it would be highly unlikely they would want to work together after that.

Therefore, it’s now clear that the Edward Scissorhands star declined the film because of the sheer length of the script and not because of his ex-girlfriend.

The reason why Titanic became such a cultural phenomenon was not just because of the amazing visuals that director James Cameron brought into the film, but it was the sheer simplicity of the plot that was presented in such an impactful and resonating way that everyone who saw this film was brought to tears from the love story between Jack and Rose. Along with that, every other aspect of the film was executed to perfection, which helped it win 11 Academy Awards and leave its mark on history.
