James Gunn was initially about to begin filming the third installment in the fall of 2018 before his firing.
The director wrote and directed the first two sequels in the beloved franchise, which have made more bucketloads of cash at the box office. Louis D’Esposito called the actor to tell him Gunn has fired. When Pratt heard the news, he recalled as he replied, “Jesus f–king Christ, don’t do it.”
Following the firing of Guardians of the Galaxy franchise director, Chris Pratt and his film co-stars Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff, among others, shared a co-signed open letter to Disney via Instagram post asking for James Gunn to be reinstated. The statement reads:
“We fully support James Gunn. We were all shocked by his abrupt firing last week and have intentionally waited these ten days to respond in order to think, pray, listen, and discuss.”
“In that time we have been encouraged by the outpouring of support from fans and members of the media who wish to see James reinstated as director of Volume 3, as well as discouraged by those who were so easily duped into believing the many outlandish conspiracy theories around him.”
According to Hollywood Reporter, at the time, Moneyball star Pratt shared verses from the Bible with director James Gunn via texts messages, including one from the Book of James: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” Pratt wanted Gunn to be back to direct the trilogy, and he decided to pen an open letter, after which Disney reinstated James Gunn as the writer-director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 in March 2019.
