Jeremy Renner’s boundless versatility transcends conventional boundaries as he ventures into diverse pursuits, embracing music, home renovation, and even creating the short-lived Jeremy Renner App. His multifaceted journey into stardom traces back to the early days of his acting career, particularly in 2002, when he achieved considerable acclaim for his role in David Jacobson’s Dahmer.
Jeremy Renner’s diverse talents notwithstanding, the role of the notorious cannibalistic serial killer posed a whole new level of challenge. In a candid Interview Magazine feature, Renner opened up about his experience stepping into the shoes of Jeffrey Dahmer, shedding light on the profound intricacy and gravity of the character he brought to life. However, the role affected his personal life.
Dahmer’s Character Haunted Jeremy Renner For A Long Time
Taking on the role of the infamous murderer and cannibal, Jeremy Renner candidly acknowledged the toll it exacted on him. Immersed in the character’s darkness, he found himself unable to go out for drinks in nightclubs, knowing how the real-life Wisconsin-based killer would prey on victims in such places.
“It really messed with me for a couple of years, that role. I couldn’t go into bars alone. I still really can’t. It makes me think about how easy it is to put something in someone’s drink and then have your way with them. I mean, oh my gosh. It’s just one of those things where someone who has a lot of free time can do a lot of good, or a lot of bad.”
In 1992, Dahmer’s heinous acts resulted in a life sentence after being convicted of several murders. Tragically, just two years later, he met a brutal end when a fellow inmate took his life in a violent confrontation.
Jeremy Renner Wasn’t Aware Of Dahmer’s Crimes
Jeffrey Dahmer, an infamous serial killer, etched his name into American history through his heinous acts, claiming the lives of 17 male victims from 1978 to 1991. Reverberations of his chilling legacy persist, resurfacing with the recent true crime miniseries, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which rekindles public interest. For decades, the profoundly disturbing accounts of his methods have cast a haunting shadow.
During his interview with Interview Magazine, Jeremy Renner made a startling admission, revealing that he had no knowledge of Jeffrey Dahmer or his notorious crimes prior to taking on the role. The actor’s lack of awareness about the serial killer’s chilling history makes his decision to portray Dahmer in the miniseries all the more extraordinary and demonstrates the depth of his dedication to the craft.
“Well you know it happened so fast… it was the complete opposite of the ‘Hurt Locker’ where I had time to prepare. I mean, I didn’t even know who Jeffrey Dahmer was, and then four days later after reading the script we’re shooting principal photography, and two weeks later we’re done. It was such a whirlwind.”
Dahmer is available for rent or purchase on Google Play.
