After the restructuring of the DC universe, many films and characters were left hanging in the air, one of them being Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. Despite the success of the first film the second film took its time to be shot and announced. Even then there is no finality as to how long will Aquaman survive James Gunn and Peter Safran’s axe.
Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom is set to hit the theatres in December, and the actor contemplates the slippery slope. What is the future of Aquaman? the most probable answer is the second film’s success will decide the fate of Momoa. The second answer is if Aquaman fits into Gunn’s vision it might make it to the finish line.
Jason Momoa on the future of Aquaman in DCU
In a recent interview, Jason Momoa gave us the answer to the question: What decides the future of Aquaman in DCU? He almost gloated that there is no worry as Aquaman is here to stay,
“Peter [Safran]’s my producer [on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom], and is a dear friend. I absolutely think Aquaman will be involved in the DCU. It’s on, bro – there’s no one bigger than Aquaman! But, also, I hope people are excited to see the new one.”
He continues,
“It’s fun. I really enjoy doing comedy. There’s some really funny stuff with Patrick Wilson. I really adore him. We had a great time working together. It’s like we’re brothers. There’s a lot of cool stuff happening in this one.”
Jason Momoa has been open about his meetings with Gunn and a friendly relationship with the co-head, the GOT star has also been linked to the character of Lobo. It would serve as a good opportunity to make a comeback if Aquaman does not work out.
Fans react to his unofficial announcement
Aquaman’s future was in grave danger also due to their leading lady being one of the most hated women on the internet and public media. Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s highly televised trial brought bad press for Amber Heard, destroying her reputation, after the trials no one would work with her. Despite the controversies, Amber Heard is said to reprise her role as Mera in the sequel.
In a cover for Total Film, Momoa elaborated on his future at DC, the quote went viral and the Twitter commenced its reactions, advice, opinions, and slamming. Fans are not happy with Momoa, they want Aquaman but only with a different casting,
Many feel that Jason Momoa is following the footsteps of Zachary Levi the Shazam star, and no good will come out of it. Shazam: Fury of the Gods fell flat at the theatres and has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 51%. The film is also muddled in controversies about Zachary Levi not promoting it enough and the talks of an alternative ending. In the end, Shazam will also be discarded from the DCU like many other projects.
Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom is set to release on 25 December 2023.
