James Gunn has the responsibility of not only handling the path of the DC Universe but also the weight of bringing an entirely new era of Superman to the fans. He is aware of the task at hand and does not want to abuse any of the lore set up by previous movies. He understands the responsibility given to him and although he is a skilled director with some of the best Marvel Cinematic movies under his name, Gunn still does not want to go into a movie this important without preparation.
After Henry Cavill’s exit, things have been even more difficult to maneuver. Fans are standing rigidly against the CEO, more so even gatekeeping Cavill and his Superman. His response to this has been calculated and hasn’t yet tampered with his determination to make Superman: Legacy an upcoming masterpiece that would kick-start the DCU.
James Gunn Wants His Unique Touch For Superman: Legacy
James Gunn confirmed in an interview that making Superman: Legacy would be no easy task. He wants to make sure that it would not be a comedy movie looking for the audience’s laughs every few seconds. The director has a clear outlook on what he wants to do and what he doesn’t want to do, ensuring that his movie is not a splitting image of the previous Superman movies while still honoring all those who came before him.
“How can I make it different from the Superman movies that have been made so far, but also have it respect all the Superman movies that have been made so far?”
In the wise words of Uncle Ben, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Gunn is very much aware of the big impact his movie could have on people seeing that Clark Kent is the symbol of hope. After Henry Cavill‘s departure, this hope was taken from the fans and it is up to the director to bring it back.
Could The Superman Movies Take A Darker Turn?
In comparison to Batman, Superman is probably a shining beacon of hope. However, seeing just how common the idea of that has become, change might not be a bad thing. James Gunn wants to keep the pattern of Superman being one of the biggest superheroes in any form of media at the moment. The challenge would be to make the movie not a shadow of Man of Steel or any other Superman movie while still maintaining the full glory of the character.
A big part of that would also come down to the actor portraying the character and while that is not decided yet, fans would only have to be more and more patient. Gunn confirmed that the creative freedom he got with Peacemaker and The Guardians of the Galaxy would all be gone while making Superman: Legacy. The task would also allow the movies to get much darker yet still connect with the audience in a natural fashion.
