James Gunn has officially started working on his DCU plan, as he confirmed last month that the one project under the new DCU is already under production. After taking over as the co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran, he revealed his plans to reboot the DC universe. The director also announced that he does not plan to continue with the former Superman actor, Henry Cavill. He revealed the initial projects from the first chapter of the DCU in January this year.
Gunn recently took to Twitter to share that he will be directing the first film under his DCU plan, Superman: Legacy. He also shared that he was not always sure about taking the job himself.
James Gunn Was Not Sure About Directing Superman: Legacy
James Gunn recently shared details about his new project as she officially confirmed that he will be directing the first film under the new DCU, Superman: Legacy, which is set to release in July 2025. Talking about the release date of the film, he also shared that it is the same day as his father’s birthday, who always supported his love for comics and movies.
In a series of tweets, the American filmmaker also shared that he was not sure if he should direct the film or not. He shared that “he was hesitant to direct, despite the constant pestering by Peter Safran and others to commit.” However, he finally decided to work on the script and has also decided to direct Superman: Legacy.
But he was still not sure if he should direct the film, as he did not feel “visually and emotionally” connected to the story. He said, “Just because I write something doesn’t mean I feel it in my bones, visually and emotionally, enough to spend over two years directing it.”
Although he was not sure at first, The Suicide Squad director finally decided to take on the responsibility of introducing the new Superman to the DC fans. He also shared that he loves the script and is “incredibly excited” to start this journey.
While the fans, who support James Gunn’s DC reboot, are excited to see his take on the Kryptonian superhero, they have also expressed their concern over the impact it would have on the other projects under Gods & Monsters.
Superman: Legacy Gets Official Release Date
James Gunn’s recent updates seem to hint that the DC Studios co-CEO could have already completed the script of the first film under the new DCU. And the studio would probably focus on casting the new Superman, who would be able to fit into the story James Gunn and Peter Safran are planning to tell with Superman: Legacy.
The co-CEOs have confirmed that it would not be an origin story for Clark Kent and would primarily focus on the superhero balancing his Kryptonian heritage with human upbringing. The Super director has also confirmed that it will release on July 11, 2025.
And it is considered a big year for DC as Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel is also set to release the same year in October. James Gunn’s plan for the new DCU includes animation series, TV series, and movies, and the director has said that moving forward, all the projects will be “connected and consistent” in the DCU.
Superman: Legacy is set to release on July 11, 2025.
