James Gunn’s much-talked-about takeover of the DC Studios came with a lot of disappointment for the fans who were hoping and praying to see Henry Cavill back in action as Superman. Fans were enraged that the new regime kicked the actor out and will be bringing a newer, younger Superman to continue the franchise.
Ever since then, fans are wondering who will be taking over the responsibility of donning the cape in Superman: Legacy. There have been many speculations regarding the casting and James Gunn has constantly shut them down. So what is going on in the filmmaker’s mind exactly? Well, he recently revealed a checklist that the potential actor needs to fulfill before he can become the new Superman.
James Gunn Has Some Conditions for the Superman Actor
During a red carpet interview with Variety, James Gunn once again clarified that no actor has been finalized for Superman: Legacy. However, he stated, “We actually have some really great choices” and that he is excited about it. When asked what he is looking for in the next Superman, Gunn replied stating that he needs to have traits like humanity, compassion, and kindness as well as be someone who people would want to hug.
“The next Superman has to be someone who has all the humanity that Superman has but he’s also an alien. It’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has and has to be somebody who you want to give a hug. You know, all the Supermen have been good so we just have to add to that story.”
Gunn is all set to bring a comic-accurate Superman to the screen with Superman: Legacy, which, according to the DC head honchos, Henry Cavill was not. However, Cavill built himself such a “legacy” with Superman that it didn’t matter to a lot of fans. Well, if you have someone in mind who checks all the boxes, you better let Gunn know!
Chris Pratt is Not James Gunn’s Superman
Kind, compassionate, humane, and someone you would love to give a hug to, reminds a lot of people of another superhero actor – Chris Pratt. Pratt has been amongst the fan favorites of the superhero genre ever since he took over the role of Star-Lord in Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Since Gunn is linked to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and is good friends with Pratt, fans did wonder if the actor could potentially play the new Superman. However, despite him being compassionate and totally huggable, he is not a choice for the role. When Variety’s interviewer brought up Pratt’s name, Gunn stated laughing, “It’s not Chris Pratt. If he was a few years younger, maybe.”
While no one knows who the new Superman is going to be, one thing is for certain; fans are going to need some time to adjust to the new actor and it’s definitely not going to be a smooth ride for Superman: Legacy. We wonder what fate holds for the first project of the revamped DCU.
Superman: Legacy is set to release in theatres on July 11, 2025.
