James Gunn Refused To Direct a Superman Movie When Henry Cavill Was Still in DCU, Did The Suicide Squad Instead: "I was offered Superman years ago"

James Gunn has been steadily perfecting Superman: Legacy as he turns the first project of the first chapter of the DC Universe into his passion project. The movie is set to initiate an entirely new era for the DCU as well as Superman, completely ridding any trace of Henry Cavill’s Superman despite his involvement in Black Adam.

However, the co-CEO of the franchise revealed that he had been offered the project much earlier. In fact, he had been working on the movie six months prior to his takeover. Since then he has been working hard and is putting extensive effort into making the movie the best of Superman so that fans and critics alike can see its beauty.

Henry Cavill’s Involvement Stopped James Gunn From Making A Superman Movie

In a tweet where James Gunn had been explaining the importance of the release date for Superman: Legacy, he confirmed that the movie was first offered to him years ago. He added that the 11th of July was his father’s birthday. Gunn credited his father and the support he got from him up until he passed away three years ago to contribute to his journey of filmmaking.

“I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved.”

The producer added that although he had the chance to make the movie much earlier, he did not have enough resources or inspiration to make a movie that would accurately bring Superman to the fans. Henry Cavill was playing the hero during that time and the direction that Zack Snyder’s version of the Kryptonian was going in was not one Gunn wanted to interfere with. It was only a few months ago that he finally found what he needed to bring his version of Superman to life.

James Gunn Found Inspiration To Write A Script For Superman: Legacy Under A Year Ago

“Just because I write something doesn’t mean I feel it in my bones, visually and emotionally, enough to spend over two years directing it, especially not something of this magnitude.”

His love for the character and the script that he finally came up with were congruent in nature. He began writing the script and came up with what the fans have now readied themselves to see.

Superman: Legacy will be available to watch in theatres from 11th July 2025.
