James Gunn’s ascension as potentially one of the most creatively powerful and coveted people in the industry has made him a force to be reckoned with. With his new executive powers at DC Studios, the co-CEO has embarked on a journey to transform the face of the franchise completely. And with his recently green-lit plans for the DC reboot, the first cinematic chapter in the Gods and Monsters saga will be his very own Superman: Legacy, written and directed by Gunn himself.
James Gunn Has Plans For Marvel Star in DC’s Legacy
It’s the end of an era for Marvel as one of its in-house franchises comes to a grand close with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. And just as Gunn bows out of his Marvel duties, so does his ever-loyal and enviably faithful team of Guardians. At the film’s recent premiere, James Gunn confirmed Pom Klementieff’s recent transition to DCU from Marvel. Klementieff revealed to Variety’s Marc Malkin,
“We’ve had conversations and we’re making plans already. But nothing is confirmed yet. There would be one specific character but I can’t tell you now. It’s in progress… I mean, I knew about the character and I thought the character was f**king cool.”
As far as hyped-up teasers go, this has to be right up there among the winners for the upcoming DCU projects. As of this moment, only a skeletal roster for Creature Commandos has been revealed and as for the rest of Chapter One, it is anyone’s guess currently on who is playing which character.
James Gunn Opens Up DCU’s Chapter One With Superman
James Gunn’s blueprint for DCU was received with a fervor that is hardly common for the modern audience. The kind of popularity that James Gunn possesses today – being one of the few directors who has garnered just as devoted a fandom as his film’s stars and is immediately recognizable by face – is a rare thing for filmmakers who choose to exert their artistic talents from behind the lens.
Now, with a plan that boasts an enthusiastic and expansive arc in the coming 3-5 years, Gunn has opened up the century-old lore-infused DC Bible with an ambition grand enough to put all his predecessors to shame. It is only natural, however, to usher in the franchise’s renaissance with its greatest icon: Superman.
After penning the script for Legacy, the Peacemaker writer-director announced his plans to direct the DCU opening film in March ’23. The latest update from the studio has confirmed the launch of the pre-production phase, soon to be followed up by the casting process for which Gunn has claimed they already have “some really great choices.”
Superman: Legacy premieres on July 11, 2025.
