It is difficult to run a company, more so when you are working for another one, not to mention a rival enterprise. That is quite the case with James Gunn taking the wheels at DC Studios while also carrying a Marvel project in the back seat. Now, the director is getting so much flak for promoting his own project.
For the past decade, Gunn helmed Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, one of the most successful franchises in the world of comic book movie adaptations. In October, the filmmaker moved to the studio’s rival company to rebuild the crumbling empire of the former DCEU. Together with Peter Safran, they have started revamping the enterprise and begun announcing future projects for the years to come.
Fans Question James Gunn’s Loyalty To DC Studios After Promoting His Marvel Project
Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is only a few weeks away from its worldwide premiere, hence James Gunn has been doing promotional rounds for his own film. He posted a behind-the-scene photo on Instagram and a fan left a comment under the post:
“The worst business that DC could do was to hire someone who advertises the competition… unbelievable, now can you imagine what their movies are going to be like??? I think it’s a disaster.”
In response, Gunn explained why it is about loyalty and not turning his back on a project he worked on for several years:
“The last thing DC would want is someone who would spend the last 12 years of his life creating a series of films, and then turn his back on the last movie he created and poured his heart and souls into, as well as his collaborators and the investors.”

He also noted that everyone knew his commitment even before joining DC Studios:
“I wasn’t hired at DC without everyone on board being very clear and supportive up front and continuously through this process.”
The accusation of Gunn’s lack of loyalty stirred further controversy on social media. Check out people’s reactions below:
This is indeed a unique situation that entails more understanding for fans of both parties. Gunn is one of the most open and accessible filmmakers who use social media to post updates, teasers, and promotions. His answer firmly says that his loyalty belongs to no brand but to the people he collaborated with and his own personal commitments.

James Gunn Will Continue Promoting Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3
Until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters this May, Gunn will have to deal with these kinds of comments for quite some time. In the meantime, the director will be busy promoting the third installment of the GOTG franchise, which he confirmed as the final iteration of the epic space saga.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is written and directed by Gunn himself, starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel. The movie also welcomes franchise newcomers Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, Chukwudi Iwuji as High Evolutionary, and Maria Bakalova as Cosmo the Spacedog.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will premiere worldwide on May 5, 2023.
