James Gunn is one of the most talked about celebrities in current times. The reasons for this perhaps have to do with the fact that besides being an exceptionally talented and respected filmmaker, having been responsible for massively successful projects like the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Peacemaker, Brightburn, and The Suicide Squad, he has become The co-CEO of one of the biggest studios and franchises of all time, DC Studios.
What is important to remember, however, is the fact that before joining the DC Universe, Gunn was one of the most cherished directors at DC’s biggest competition, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker revealed how working in the DCEU was different from working in the MCU.
James Gunn Talks About How Working At DC Is Different Than Marvel
While doing an interview on the last few days of filming The Suicide Squad, James Gunn talked about how much he preferred working on this project compared to those he worked on with Marvel Studios. Elaborating on this, the filmmaker revealed that while working on Marvel, he felt that he was working on individual films, referring to The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
“I feel like I’ve been making little independent movies with the Guardians of the Galaxy films because this film is gigantic,” said Gunn to EW
Adding to this, he mentioned that that was much different than what he was doing right now with the Margot Robbie film and how that felt a lot bigger in scale to him. This would make sense considering the fact that there is a 150-foot tall alien starfish in that project named Starro.
DC Thought That James Gunn Was ‘Unjustly Treated’
James Gunn then went on to talk about what happened between him and Marvel studios at the time, considering the fact that the filmmaker was let go from the studio after past controversial comments made by him resurfaced. When asked about this, the filmmaker put it quite brutally, stating that he was fired from Marvel and after he found out about the comments, which went viral online, he knew this was coming.
Gunn then went on to reveal, however, that a few days after this happened, he had a meeting with Toby Emmerich, the then Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman, and Peter Safran, the now co-CEO of DC alongside Gunn. In this meeting, the filmmaker was told that Emmerich thought that he was unjustly treated by Marvel and that DC was willing to do anything that Gunn wanted to do.
Circumstances have changed quite a lot now, considering the fact that Gunn has recently directed the third part of Guardians of the Galaxy films series and has a very extensive plan for the future of the DCU.
