Today is the grand premiere of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel to the epic sci-fi/adventure film which was hailed to be one of the most phenomenal films in cinematic history. And with the sequel out in cinemas, the director is already working vigorously towards the third installment in the franchise, which is scheduled to hit theatres at the end of 2024.
According to reports, James Cameron apparently submitted a cut for Avatar 3 just last week, one which is approximately 9 hours long. Yup, you read that right. The rumor further claims that the Avatar filmmaker is adamant about having the entire 9-hour-long cut edited with VFX before he sits to sort it all out.
The VFX team seems to be in for a treat. Or not.
James Cameron Allegedly Gave A 9-Hour-Long Cut of Avatar 3
With Avatar 2 finally running in theatres, James Cameron has diverted his focus completely onto the third part of the film which is set to make it to the big screens in 2024. And he has reportedly already “handed in” the cut for Avatar 3 which is said to be 9 hours long.
Now the process ahead should ideally involve Cameron sieving through the cut to figure out what parts he’s planning on keeping, after which the said material would then pass for the VFX editing procedure. But of course, it would be unlike Cameron to do something so acutely conventional. So, instead of that, the Canadian filmmaker apparently wants the VFX team to edit the entire 9-hour cut before truncating and consolidating it more conclusively.
Although sources state that Avatar 3‘s unedited version is 9 hours long, the director himself is yet to confirm any of these claims so there’s no way of saying whether or not this is accurate. But what we do know for a fact is that Avatar 2 is certain to blow the box office up, so the franchise’s future is definitely a bright one.
All We Know About James Cameron’s Avatar 3
Unlike the sequel which is being released more than a decade after Avatar (2009), fans fortunately enough won’t have to wait for Avatar 3 for such a long time.
With the lengthy gap covering the first and second movie, Cameron and his crew have had plenty of time to work on the storyline of the third part with Avatar 3 planning to continue the story and legacy of Jake Sully’s family. While old cast members including Zoë Saldaña, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and Stephen Lang will be reprising their roles in the third film, the Aliens director is also going to introduce a set of new characters in Avatar 3.
Although plot details are yet to be divulged completely, Avatar: The Way of Water is highly likely to determine many elements concerning Avatar 3 considering the sequel will set up the base for the third part.
Avatar: The Way of Water is currently playing in cinemas.
Avatar 3 is scheduled to release on December 20, 2024.
