Greta Gerwig is one of those directors who everyone is looking at right now. The Ladybird and Little Women director was already highly regarded but her upcoming film will be a litmus test in many ways. Her and Margot Robbie’s Barbie is releasing right with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible 7. It’s the battle of the biggest films.

“Yes, of course. It would have to be something I had a feeling for and a relationship to. A well-shot, well-executed action movie is just incredible. It’s a dance. I’ve never done anything like that. But even in a small way, working with the stunt coordinator who did fight choreography on Barbie, he was just fascinating. It was so fun to talk to him.”

It has been announced that Greta Gerwig will direct and write at least two Chronicles of Narnia films for Netflix. It’s clear that these projects will take up a chunk of her time. Marvel fans want her to direct a Scarlet Witch solo film while DC fans want her to direct Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which has already been announced as one of the films in James Gunn’s DCU. While it will be interesting to see which franchise Gerwig chooses, everything rests on the upcoming Margot Robbie’s Barbie film.

It will have to be a box office as well as critical success for Gerwig’s directing future to take flight with a big-budget superhero film. Otherwise, all of the hype and chatter around her can die down in an instant.

Barbie will be released on July 21, 2023.
