Portraying such an iconic character had several challenges for the actor along the way. Talking about how he mentally and physically prepared for the role, Considine revealed that he had several personal tragedies that helped him associate with the character. Opening up about his personal life, it seems that the actor was able to understand the character of Viserys Targaryen down to his core.

In an interview with Variety, here’s what Paddy Considine revealed when asked about how he prepared for the role.

“A lot of it was emotional stuff that I could relate to. I’ve got teenage daughters; I could relate to that aspect of it. I’ve lost people in my life that I love; I could relate to that. And then the main thing was to plot his physical demise.”

He further continued,

“We actually started shooting Episode 7 first, and he’s very far down the line by that time. So we had to map out where I thought he was going to be. He’s suffering badly. He’s kind of rotting. He smells.”

This wasn’t all since Paddy Considine further revealed which scenes from the season essentially brought his character to life for him. Talking about the young co-star Milly Alcock, the Peaky Blinders actor revealed his favorite scene and it’s quite an interesting one.

House of the Dragon had several iconic shooting locations and a high budget that essentially made the series what it is today. Relying heavily on intense scenes involving political talks and prophecies, Paddy Considine revealed the scene that essentially made the character feel alive for the actor.

“In Episode 1, the scene with Milly, the young Rhaenyra, where I tell her about the [Song of Ice and Fire] prophecy. We shot that twice. To be fair, it was Milly’s first day, and even though I’m doing all the talking, it’s a big number to put somebody into.”

The Dead Man’s Shoes actor further continued,

“A scene like that is better once you’re established in this story a bit more. So we went back and reshot it. Doing that sort of dialogue —it doesn’t come easy. So I was really putting that belief in it, like the world itself depended on it — which it did. That was a scene that I was really proud of.”

With a completed season one, fans eagerly await the arrival of season 2 of the series. Till then, House of the Dragon is available to stream on HBO Max across the world.
