In the film, Johnson plays a character who struggles to understand and come to terms with Christian Grey’s dark desires and the complex nature of their relationship. She starts as a shy and reserved character, but over time, becomes more confident and assertive in her interactions with Christian.
Why Was Dakota Johnson Frustrated While Filming S*x Scenes
Fifty Shades of Grey had a plethora of scenes portrayed sensually and erotically, with a focus on the physical and emotional connection between the characters. They are often shot in a stylized manner, with close-ups of the characters’ bodies and intimate details.
During an interaction with Interview magazine in 2016, Dakota Johnson was asked about her experience filming bold scenes in Fifty Shades of Grey. Johnson came with a witty response to the question, saying,
“Yeah. I’m doing one today. It’s not … comfortable. It’s pretty tedious.” Johnson added, “Well, we’re not having actual s*x. But I’ve been simulating s*x for seven hours straight right now, and I’m over it.”
The actress was also asked whether her father watched the scene and how he reacted to it. In response to that, the actress said, “No! God, no. Thank God.”
Dakota Johnson’s Co-Star Hated Critics Bashing The Film
While Dakota Johnson shared her ordeal of portraying intimate scenes for hours, her co-star Jamie Dornan wasn’t really impressed by the reviews the film received. The actor admitted that he struggled with the film’s reception and its subsequent installments. Dornan said,
“You know that you’re going to have these movies that are for the fans, that the fans are going to love, that are gonna make a ton of money. But you know that the critics will be just, you know, licking their lips and that’s exactly what happened. And we knew that was going to happen so you’re watching that play out and at times that’s f**king difficult.”
Dornan also admitted that he was relieved upon learning that Charlie Hunnam had been cast as Christian Grey before him. “F**k, that’s great, what a nightmare for that guy. He’s going to have all this scrutiny,” Dornan said.
When Hunnam withdrew from the project, Dornan eventually secured the role but soon became the target of intense criticism and hostility.
